Creating a name that fits

Not sure where I would put this... but I need a little help from those that would have a better understanding of it than I do...

What would "Robert" translate into elvish? I went to a few sites and all the translated names were different, not even remotely close...

Was wondering if anyone could maybe help me figure out my elvish name?

    If you consider elvish to be closest to welsh, the robert would translate to robert since robert is a welsh name.

    All-knowing Google points me to the online etymology dictionary.

    It says that: 'Robert: masc. proper name, from Old North French form of Old High German Hrodberht, lit. "bright with glory," from hrod- "fame, glory" + -berht "bright."'

    Hrodbehrt sounds more Dwarvish than Elvish though. You could try some non-english-language-version of "bright with glory" though, and see how that turns out.

    I don't know elvish (yet!), but generally I go with what "sounds" right. And I seem to recall Roulen being a good elf-sounding variation.

    Robert means bright fame. The elvish translation to that would be Calminaion (Kal-Men-Eye-On) which means bright honor/distinction/fame.

    For further enquiries of this kind, Google found this. You even get Sindarin and Quenya names!

    Robert... is so german.... Rhobert possible, still a derivative of the german name, and elves welsh? Thats pretty questionable, elves are from germanic lore.. not celtic or british.

    @Djimmy Drow always seems so... harsh... almost like Russian or German. Elvish sounds a bit more suave to me... so I don't know about that (I'm going off of what I hear in game. Kivan vs. Viconia). @Mykra I did get that name using an arwen site or some other which was from lord of the rings, and I don't know how connected this game is to that series...

    I am about to go with Calminaion though... it DOES sound very nice...

    Fantasy has grown in leap and bounds, but Tolkien's language was very much a part of the setting, and still is in some ways. Many elves from earlier books did use his language for their names, or took bastardized versions of it (Like Salvatore had Drizzt's brother named Dinin (Tolkien's Dinen/Dinin meant silent/soft. And Elaine Cunningham used the general building blocks of how Tolkien constructed his names, if not the exact meanings. And Greenwood/Gygax were both heavily influenced in creating worlds by what JRR did.)

    So yes, a pure LOTR name would fit right in no problems.

    But I don't know if it actually translates anything, or if it just produces random names. But it says my Mordor name is Sharkû the Masher, so it can't be all wrong. :D

    @calmar Tried a few translations, it seems to produce Tolkien-ish Sindarin, with a few mistakes though, like word starting with "w" (In Sindarin, one has only "gw").

    Lots of my characters nowadays are simply Charn and Charna, short for MALECHARName and FEMALECHARNAme respectively :)

    Charna is also an actual name, it means 'Dark' in Yiddish.
