Attack Roll bonus = THAC0 bonus?

HooHoo Member Posts: 128
Hello.

Here is a simple question.

Is the Attack Roll bonus exactly same with THAC0 bonus?

I've thought that the Attack Roll bonus affects to real dice roll, e.g., if a character obtains +1 Attack Roll bonus and his hit dice was 19, the result of real dice is 20 so the attack was decided as critical hit even if the first value of dice was 19.

I've therefore considered the Attack Roll bonus is a little bit better than THAC0 bonus...

Would someone know about this?

And I have another question... Does anybody knows the exact effect of Moral?

Getting a +1 to attack/hit is equivalent having your THAC0 lowered by 1. I think the only thing that would actually increase your die roll, such that it could turn a roll of 19 into a 20 and make it a critical hit, would be luck, but it's not implemented that way in BG.

Morale effects how likely you are to panic in combat. Your characters can panic if they take a lot of damage, or if other party members start dieing. The higher the character's morale, the less likely they are to panic. Khalid is notorious for panicking, but overall it's pretty rare to see. I'm not sure, but bonuses to morale might give you a bonus to save against spells that induce panic, such as the mage spell Horror.

I believe that an Attack Roll bonus is the same thing as a THAC0 bonus. If you turn on the option to show "To Hit Rolls" your combat log will show something like this:

    X + Y = Z (Hit/Miss)

Where X is your attack roll, Y is your total THAC0 bonus (it's the difference between your base THAC0 and your "actual" THAC0 on the character record), and Z is your final To-Hit number. So if I'm reading it correctly, the game treats THAC0 bonuses as attack roll bonuses.
