pickpocketing - getting the most out of it (spoilers!)

The pickpocketing skill is something I haven't used all that much. You're swimming in cash by midgame, so stealing a few semi-precious gems and whatnot from passersby on the street isn't necessary. Stealing items of real value is the only thing that really interests me.

I know of a few targets that have items worth pickpocketing. There's Algernon at Feldepost's. The dwarf who wants you to retrieve the Soultaker dagger in Ulgoth's Beard. The halfling standing outside the inn at Ulgoth's Beard...

But, honestly, I can't think of any others at the moment.

Who else has some decent items to pickpocket?

Is there a list somewhere of all the characters in the game that have something decent to pickpocket?

    Drizit's scimitars.

Though, honestly I keep expecting them to finally equip the scimitars to Drizit like they are suppose to be and fix that.

Lol, even if the game will allow it, I just can't suspend disbelief that Drizzt wouldn't detect the attempt and slice the offending thief or bard in half for trying that. (On a side note, I think one can arguably KoS Drizzt, though.)

And yeah, he's got the swords right in his hands. So...

PC: "Hey Drizzt, buddy, good fight! Here, have this Potion of Healing!"

    PC THROWS POTION

PC (whispers to Imoen): "He had to sheathe his scimitars to catch and drink the potion, snatch them now!"

"Psst, Drizzt over there in the trees, I think I see some more gnolls. Ah, wait, just a sec... yes, here's a spyglass. Yes, mhm, you extend it. That's right, yep, you adjust it. Yes, in that stand of trees right over there. Can you see 'em? Or is it just my eyes playing tricks on me?"

Actually, I was just checking Oublek, the guy who collects bounties in Nashkel. He drops a pretty sizable purse of gold plus the emeralds if killed after completing the Prism quest. I'd imagine the same loot could also be pickpocketed after completing the quest.

    Good thinking, I'll try that.

Almost all quest givers that give you items as reward, can be pickpocketed for the item in advance.

This is especially useful for evil and/or low charisma parties as they usually receive less items (e.g. Drienne in Dryad Falls will give you a scroll of Protection from Undead only if the NPC reaction is high; the scroll however can be pickpocketed, etc.).

If I remember correctly you can no longer pickpocket the Emeralds from Oublek in BGEE.

Edit: I've just checked (in BGEE 1.0.2012) and the Emeralds aren't pickpocketable anymore (you get the "Target has no items" message), but they will still drop if you kill him.

@Erg That's not very logical. I wonder if you can pickpocket them from Prism? Not that there's a good reason to do that, really... Because they'll drop anyway.

You cannot pickpocket the Emeralds from Oublek (checked in game)
You can pickpocket the Emeralds from Prism (checked in NI as I don't have a suitable save at the moment)

@Erg Oh, I believe you, it just strikes me as kind of weird to not have the emeralds pickpocketable from Oublek. I wonder what the rationale was. Anyway, thanks for checking.

    @Dogg, that's awesome, thanks!

Looks like it's missing ToSC content, but that's a great list.

+ Cloak of Balduran from Quenash in the basement of the Blushing Mermaid Tavern

    Nice!

However, this list is not complete (e.g. Drienne's scroll is missing) and not up to date for BGEE (e.g. you can no longer pickpocket the Bastard Sword from Aldeth Sashenstar). Still a good reference though.

This is not entirely ture however.
For example, Fuller in Cadnlekeep will give you a +1 Dagger if you Charisma is high but will give you 10 gold otherwise.
The +1 Dagger can't be pickpockected, it only pops up with the "Target has no valid items" message.

this must be fixed then its picpockable in the old steam version

I just pick pocketed the dagger off of him in the most recent patch (2012)

    Odd.
I haven't tried it in quite awhile, quite a few patches ago, maybe they made it pickpocketable.

The order for Oublek and the gems is: sell them to Nashkel Store, steal them back, then turn them in.

You can pick pocket the Red Wizards on the platform if they don't attack you for good scrolls. If Edwin is in your party and they won't fight you, they walk by in a line and you can steal from all of them before they disappear. It is obviously more profitable if you kill them though.

The guy who is afraid of the bear and gives Boots of the North to high rep parties. You can steal the boots if he only gives you gold. But again, more profitable to kill him because that way you also get the remaining gold.

In most cases, you can only steal things that you would get anyway if your rep/charisma is good and you gain more if you just kill the person. Usually, it doesn't even lower your rep.

And it's worth noting that charming these npcs will always give you the reward.
    You can't charm elves though.
