Maybe your character just *did not care about the iron crisis* and was more interested in exploring the world for the first time. Comes across a big tower, smells adventure. I can see that.
Why a novice adventurer, terrorized by the murder of his mentor, would divert the only clue he had to understand what was happening and explore the most complex dungeon of the sword coast ?
The iron crisis has been going on for who knows how long (somebody?) so a couple of days delay in getting it shorted out shouldn't really matter. However there would've been "slightly" easier places to tackle than Durlag's.
Well, you have heard all manner of rumors about the mines, how there are demons on the lower levels, and miners have been disappearing and all. So it only stands to reason that you want to sharpen your adventuring skills and pick up some useful gear before going there.
You hear about a possibly haunted tower with all manner of über items lying around, and decide to practice your skills there before taking on the mines!

Lemme see if i understood you... I went to Durlag's (the most deadly dungeon of the sword coast) to sharpen my adverturing skills so i can face some ... kbolds ?
This is so obvious. You know about this iron crisis... What *currently* comes from the mines is flawed. You went to Durlag's Tower, a dungeon that hasn't been touch by anyone in ages, to find old iron weapons that won't break. Perfectly logical!

Yeah, now i can stomp bandits and kbolds with my World Edge. LOL
@VittordeVitto Did you explore the countryside to level-up, then do Durlag's at, say, around party level 5? I've done it at level 5--it was tough but doable. At a party level lower than that it would be very, very tough indeed.
I wandered solo with my F / Cleric until he reached lv 5/5. Then i met Baeloth and Shar- Teel (dualed her and wandered some more), then i went to Durlag's.

It was just one of these lucky days when you got more than you asked for.
