Dealing with Minsc

I'm not sure when the timer starts on Minsc blowing his top. I think its after you pick him up at the edge of town. One thing that seems to keep that from happening is to use other party members to find the fortress first. Then go get him. I have cleared out the fort and not recruited the mage until I cleared out the fort then go pick him up after dumping two party members I don't want. Then fight my way back into fortress. There are not nearly as many puppys in there to get in your way and the loot they drop may not be much. But every little bit helps. Including getting more XP's. LOL

    What do you mean by "blowing his top"? When he starts to complain or leaves the party because you don't do his quest? Or when he goes berzerk in Nashkel? If you go to the gnoll fortress anyway, you can just recruit him right before going to that map, leave 1 free slot in your party, and add Dynaheir after rescuing her. Saves you the backtracking.

    Yeah, if you decide to go do something like the Mines before picking her up, you run a risk of him getting upset with you. But if you set off right away, you should have no problems. And he is definitely nice to have against the 'Pups'.

    The Minsc timer is a bit frustating, no joke.

    You can clear out Nashkell and then go get her (with Minsc in the group), but this is dangerous - you never know when you'll be wounded and need to rest.

    The first time he went berserk on me, I was shocked and unable to believe it had happened. Nice touch, if a bit frustrating.

    I think if the NPCs in BG1 were as fleshed out as they were in BG2, Minsc might have been written a little differently. Always seemed a little out of character for him to blindly attack you just for turning down his quest. Not very heroic at all, even if you are a jerk for denying help.

    This could only happen via a mod, but I'd actually enjoy it if Minsc was scripted to go berserk on some sort of random timer. Perhaps make his berserk state more powerful than his 'special ability', though... Like, he really mops the floor with enemies when he's in this state.

    And you'd just have to deal with him like that. That would add a new layer to using him.

    It could get costly keeping him around, actually. Eg, if he erupts into a rage and kills an innocent before there's time to react.

    You'd have to have some spells ready to deal with it. If it happens during combat just stay out of his way. But outside of combat and when other people are present, you'd have to have Power Word: Sleep, Hold, etc., prepared just in case. (Maybe just a wand of paralyzation would do it.)

    Has anyone ever tried regularly using his "special ability" to see if they can make it work?

    I have never had this issue with minsc. I usually pick him up and head to the mines clear pick up Xan to fill my party out. Then hit the 2 zones on the way to the fortress clear the fort to D pick her up and dump Xan. Boo and Minsc rejoice and all is well

    By blow his top I mean going after party member and innocents at the wrong time and costing you all kinds of grief to repair the damage. The 1st time trying to find the one inch gap in the last terrain map before you can reach the fort in time can cause all kinds of frustration.

    @Lemernis I give the guy Brage's sword, when I use him.

    @Toffee Ah, right! I wonder what he's like with Brage's sword plus his own Berserk special ability. I have to try this now. I may not stick with it for long. But I have to try it, lol.

    @Lemernis

    I tried this on my own berserker, and he kept going berserk because of the sword and killing the party.

    Lol, okay. Yeah, I just did a little test and it looks too difficult to manage him that way. Oh well.
