A variation of this request was originally posted on reddit by tschutt:
In BGII: ToB, the Cloak of Mirroring creates the same graphic as the spell “Spell Trap,” a gigantic white ball of energy that covers the player, whenever it is equipped. While the graphic is fine for the spell, it is very obnoxious to always have it always cover the wearer, just while walking around even out of combat. It would be best to remove the graphic for the cloak entirely while still letting the spell "Spell Trap" create the animation.
I personally also hate the visual effect of the Cloak of Displacement. It has some nice stats but I refuse to use it due to the eye strain it causes (even the item description mentions how it causes eye strain on other party members, lol).
A heavy-handed way of dealing with this would be to give us an option to disable all equipment visual effects. Though it would be nice if we could disable these animations on a case by case basis (since I do like some of them) just by clicking on the item, if this were possible.

although maybe turning all the magical effects is a bit extreme? perhaps the most invasive permanent item spell effects could be made more subtle.
