Dialogue continuation? - SPOILERS!

Well, I ran into a certain Wizard on the coast way... Since I've played the game, before, I know that I'll meet him again which stirred a question in my mind that's been lingering for awhile:

Does it matter what you answer to him? And this doesn't mean just Elminster, but everyone: For example, there are several dialogue paths with Solar in ToB; I was wondering if your answers in such conversations actually matters, i.e. will the next conversation be different if you chose a particular dialogue-path in the former? I'm guessing it doesn't matter, but you never know. :)
