A Question on Quest Time Limit

I've just reached Neshkel (on day 7) and have Montaron, Xzar, Jaheira and Khalid in my party, all of whom have a 10-day time limit for the Neshkel Mines quest before they'll leave the party, I believe.

I feel I've rested once too often on my way to Neshkel (I know one of my companions moaned once on my way to Neshkel). What I want to know is what will satisfy the 10-day requirement? Is just reaching Neshkel sufficient? Do I have to reach the mines? Or do I even have to complete the quest (in which case I'm probably snookered!)?

    So once I've spoken to the mayor, I can take as long as I wish to reach the mines - doing quests elsewhere - without fear of losing party members?

    Those four anyway. There are other companions with time limited quests too (Minsc for instance) but yeah, Jaheira/Khalid, Xzar/Montaron should stop whining.
