Filling out the team - 4 character party

For my current playthrough I've settled on a running a smaller party than usual rather than maxing out my party as always. I'm just trying to work out now who should fill my fourth slot.
Party as it stands.
CHARNAME - Dwarven Fighter Cleric - Warhammer/shield
Imoen - Thieving goodness and ranged
Neera - Zoom, bang, whoosh, BEKAW!

The way I see it I should either go for a cleric or a warrior to fill out the classic, Fighter, Cleric, Wizard, Rogue party build. I'm pretty certain that my main will be able to do enough Clericy (shut up, that's a word) stuff in between smashing things, which leads me to fighter.
So who do people suggest to fill the role of meatshield extraordinaire? Keep in mind this is a good run-through, otherwise I'd drop Dorn in there no questions asked.

    Isn't Neera Chaotic neutral
so if your going good, then drop her too
    I would add add Ajantis

I think the best good warrior is Minsc. Kivan and Ajantis are passable, but will need more buffs before big fights since Ajantis doesn't have a great strength, or any dexterity bonus. While Kivan has no constitution bonus.

Ajantis is probably the best good-aligned tank, but Kagain is the best at tanking period.

Are you doing this just for an extra challenge?

I would probarly pick Rasaad, or a melee style Kivan.... or noone.

You have 3 characters that fill pretty much all the required roles, especially if you dual class imoen.
Why not keep it at 3 so you can get more XP?

    CHARNAME is Lawful Good.
When I say good play through, I mean no evil. CN is right on the cusp, but she'll behave herself with a firm grasp. My original plan was Minsc and Dynaheir, but I figured I'd rather Neera for the enhanced experience.

@bigdogchris This isn't so much because of the challenge. It's primarily because I've always just maxed my party to six without thinking about trying to balance skillsets as I've been able to cover every role with two characters.

Take Yeslick, he can play the part your charname neglects a bit?

It's easy enough to abandon Dynaheir in a building somewhere... I think Minsc is clearly the best tank, and Neera is the most fun mage.
If dumping Dynaheir irks you, go with Kivan. I think he's the second best good tank.
I like Ajantis and often take him, but he is really lacking in hitting power. I also like Yeslik, but he comes too late, and may be a bit redundant with this party.

My Dynaheir had an "accident" this playthrough.

How about Shar-Teel? (Sorry, missed that's Good-aligned only.)

Hmm, you already have fighter thief mage and cleric covered, so how about... Garrick?

Minsc or Ajantis or Kivan. They're all good.

I prefer Kivan's soundset, and I like how flexible he is in terms of using a bow, but many people love Minsc and Mr. "Helm... Yeah!".

Shame I can't take Keldorn really.

Ajantis was sent from Amn by a certain Sir Firecam.

IMHO it would be legal to ShadowKeeper Ajantis into an Inquisitor.
  • I'd lean more towards Kivan or Minsc, just based on the fact that your Dwarven Fighter/Cleric should be a pretty beastly tank himself. I think your instincts are right in that Dorn would be great if you weren't doing a high rep playthrough; you need someone more beatstick than meatshield. My vote would be Kivan: he'll be better at picking up a bow and piling on damage from long range while still having a good strength for backing your F/C up in melee.

With that setup I'd probably pick up another character with some amount of spellcasting. Whether that be Branwen, Dynaheir, Xan, Jaheira, Garrick, Viconia, Quayle or some type of wizardly talking goldfish, that's the direction I'd be headed.
However, my ideal party doesn't have more than one character that fails to get spells before 90K experience so your opinion might differ slightly.

Just take Minsc because you only have 4 members then so you need the additional hamster-power of Boo.

Or if you like to have much spellpower, take Quayle (wow his stats suck).

I spent the day thinking it over, while avoiding that work thing... I'm going to pick up Minsc and head west to Dynaheir. A party of four we be.
I wonder how I'll go about rescuing Dynaheir with 3 characters?

    Wands are your friend:

Have Neera bring along wands of Sleep and Horror.

You could also try inching forward using Stinking Cloud and wand of Fire. There's some nice choke points in the gnoll stronghold pits area. That's exploiting the AI, though. The AI isn't smart enough to have them go around.

I did a party of four with xzar Monty and sharteel and it was boss. Charname a fighter/cleric and sharteel dualed to thief. Between Monty using ogre gauntlets and sharteel given the str tome they backstabbed the snot out of everyone
