BG2: Mods and How To Wield Them

BerengarBerengar Member Posts: 8
Heyo,

I just finished BG:EE from start to end an now want to lead my PC through BG2. Sadly I lack the patience to wait for BG2:EE, so I try to get BG2 as close as it gets to being awesomely playable by using the most popular, most stable and most accessable mods available. After reading through some threads and surfing the web, this is the list I have come up with, but I lack the insight to know whether this is workable or will lead to a burning trainweck down the road. I'd be grateful if someone more experienced could look it over and tell me if it's doable or not.

In order of installation:

1. BG2 Fixpack from http://www.gibberlings3.net/bg2fixpack/
2. BG2 Tweaks from http://www.gibberlings3.net/bg2tweaks/
3. Ascension from http://weidu.org/Ascension-WeiDU-v1.4.24.exe
4. BG2 Unfinished Business from http://mods.pocketplane.net/UnfinishedBusiness-v19.zip
5. Sword Coast Stratagems II from http://www.gibberlings3.net/scsii/
6. Widescreen Mod from http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen/

Does that make sense? Will there be any compatibility issues? Am I missing something or is one of the mods not recommandable?

Thanks in advance :)

I used all of those mods except sword coast stratagems to beat the game so I know all the other ones work together. You may as well try it out though.

SCS works fine with those mods. With the tweaks mod, I would think about whether you want the "happy party" tweak or not. You will miss out on certain party interaction if it is installed (but it gives you the option of certain incompatible groups if you do install it). I have done it both ways and prefer not to install it.

Ascension first, as it's much older and overwrites as opposed to patching things. ToBex is good too for various engine fixes/changes/enhancements, and I think might come before Ascension even, as it makes changes to the .exe.

    Fixpack after that.

Other good mods to consider (no exact order, should be fine - but honestly there can be incompatibilities and the only way to be sure is to read each forum/readme of each mod, and that's pretty exhaustive - and exhausting more importantly, but still no surety of a perfect game. Things should be fine in general in any order since Weidu mods are designed to be):

Spell revisions. Even if only for cool stuff like awesome looking planetar and deva: http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/6061/devas2zi0.png

Item revisions, rogue rebalancing, 1pp, banter pack, IEP, quest pack, tower of deception, dungeon crawl, assassinations, wheels of prophecy, item randomiser, atweaks.

Just some of my favourites...yeah, I play a heavily modded game. That incidentally is the order I use, and with no issues, apart from ToBex, which I haven't yet used.

Move Tweaks to install after UB but before SCS and I think you've got a solid order.

Isn't Ascension the first thing to install, even before BG2 Fixpack ?

Nah, Ascension has been dragged, kicking and screaming, into the modern age. The only thing you should put before Fixpack nowadays is, I believe, TobEx. Also, if you're trying some mega-mod package, I think those have to be stitched together Fixpack--you'll need to check the 1,800-page mega-mod "Easy Install Guide".

There's also a mod to make the fonts larger. It's definitely nice to not be squinting at the text after installing the widescreen mod.

I installed the mentioned mods and now have the following problem: right at the beginning of the game my Archer already sits at 4 APR with five pips in Longbow and level 8. I installed "True Grandmastery " from BG Tweaks, but shouldn't this result in 7/2 APR? Standard 1 APR + 1/2 Fighter level 7 + 1 Longbow + 1 Grandmastery Longbow?

Are there any incompatibilities I am not aware of? I couldn't find any related postings via google, so I'm somewhat lost. :/

Hum. So is there any way of getting the actual true grandmastery or is it either BG2 standard GM or overpowered GM? :/

@Berengar have you tried Redemption or the Longest Road? I am curious if this can be combined with Ascension.

Nope, didn't try any of these two.

    *snip*

    I hope that's clear...
Sweet. Works like a charm. Just out of curiosity. Is there another file which is used for the APR progression for non-Warrior classes or is there some kind of flag in some other file, which counterfeits the APR progression from this file?
