I dont like the fact that they are too close to each other. One of these two classes should have been designed with an obvious difference. However, the only real difference is that barb can go dual class.
And as I said, that is why they gave it other advantages to compensate, i.e. increased speed, immunity to backstab, resistance to damage, more HP etc.
Same with Paladins, they have a lot of bonus abilities simply for the reason that they cannot dual-class. Otherwise people would dual even more than they already do...
So they took away dual-classing to balance it out, then. Tomeyto, tomahto.
BG isn't a carbon-copy of PnP, they changed several things. And whatever the PnP basis originally, in the context of BG we can only deal with what we find in the game.
The didn't "take out" Barbarian dual classing. Barbarian was simply a last minute edition to BG2, and they didn't take the time to fully intergrate it. Same with Sorcerer. There are many dual class options that aren't in BG, but it has nothing to do with balance, and everything to do with the extra resources required to support them in the game engine.
That doesn't change the fact that they are way too similar on many levels.
Yup, the Berserker is pretty much the 2nd edition version of Barbarian. The Barbarian and Sorcerer where added in because 3rd edition was coming out about the same time as BG2, and they wanted to include some of the shiny new stuff. The could be added easily BECAUSE they where so similar to stuff they had already made.

Barbarians are copied from the 3rd edition version - where they get all those abilities - and can dual class AS WELL.

But again, all motivations aside, it's the status quo, and what we have to deal with.
