...in the Cloakwood. I have 20 charisma with the Friends spell and 17 reputation. No way should I be failing a reaction check. What gives?

Thanks for the save file. The "problem" is that you're in Chapter 5, and the game assumes that you will meet him before then. I've filed a bug report.
