Only a fool would kill Elminster. What, you want the Zhents, Cult of the Dragon, AND Harpers to think you're too powerful and dangerous to be allowed to live?

Of course, since she was the Chosen of Ed Greenwood, she probably got better...
Spoiler alert: unnecessary long correction follows.
She wasn't dead during ToT. Her essence was living on into the human Midnight (along with her chosen, as demonstrated by the fact that Bane was slain by Elminster with the help of Mystra's essence. Bane would later be resurrected by his good buddy Myrkul, only to be killed again by Torm in Tantras). Midnight as a matter of fact would later be assumed to deity-hood under the same name of Mystra. BTW, BG takes place in 1368. with the main character being 20 years old. The Time of Troubles takes place in 1358, ten years earlier. This is also the year in which Bhaal was killed by Cyric with Godsbane (Mask in disguise). However, Bhaal had foreseen his own death and had populated Faerûn with his progeny, prior to the events that take place in 1358. For completion, Mystra was killed for good
or maybe not, according to Greenwood's last novel
by Cyric in 1385, triggering the events that eventually led to the Spellplague, 4th edition and all that sort of stuff.
What were we speaking about? Ah yes. Elminster. I've never personally tried to kill him, I like the old man. I wouldn't be surprised if now the game prevents you to kill him and other important high level characters. I remember in Icewind dale II it was possible to kill for example Nickademus. At that point the game would freeze and tell you something in this line: yo, you killed a critical character and cannot continue. Better have a savegame somewhere. On a different note, parties should be prevented to kill Elminster at least and other high level characters, simply because they are so much out of the reach of the regular party. I mean, it's Elminster and we're in 1368, no Spellplauge yet. If he wanted he could pulverize the hell out of Baldur's gate (the city) in a sec. How could he succumb to a 5-6th level party?

Well yeah... but........ we like to kill things in BG.......... for the heck of it...... Actually one of the things I like most about the game is that you can attack and to some degree beat about anyone, no matter how illogical it is or how devastating it will be for your game. You can at least do it and well.... usually then you are ganked by the high-level npc or you run in to some battle mages.

He polymorphed me into a squirrel and none of us could touch him with neither blades nor spells.
And then he teleported away.
