There is nothing inherently stopping you from doing this. But the functionality isn't guaranteed to work, and if you encounter problems it's not because of a bug, it's because the games aren't designed to work together.
That said, I haven't heard any reported issues resulting from this. So if it works, go right ahead.
@ShapiroKeatsDarkMage: BGee creates separate character files (i.e. outside the saved game files) only when you explicitly export a character manually (from the character record sheet). It doesn't do it automatically except in the end-of-game sequence (and actually, the end-of-game export doesn't occur reliably).
I'm at work, so don't have access to my personal comp, but...
your bg:ee character exports are in a folder entitled baldurs gate enhanced edition (usually in my documents) then a sub folder called characters. Just copy the character file to your SOA/TOB directory and place it on the character folder there... then just import your character on character creation (choose the character file option). The same can be done with your saved games too (choose the saved game option here also they'll be in bg:ee saves folder)
Also if you use one of the new portraits I'm pretty sure you'll be forced to choose a new one or transfer the portraits via the old methods of adding more portraits.
OK. I exported my character (a Berzerker) just before final battle in BG 1 and had no problems importing it for BG 2 (after moving the character file into BG 2).

(Edit; nevermind. For some reason files were split between hard-drives.)
