Indecisive Newbie!

So I have been waiting out for the OSX version and now that it is coming out, I find myself indecisive as to what my character build should be! Also note I am not trying to necessarily power game, I just want a fun tank/in your face warrior class, where it would be a good place to get my feet wet but also be a feasible character to take through the whole series eventually!

First off, I want to do a good play-through. And after looking through the forums and doing my own research, I have decided on:

-Half-Orc Berserker (multi-classing isn't too appealing to me for the first play-through)
-Human Paladin/Cavalier (lay in hands and immunities sounds nice!)
-Human Berserker with a possibility of dual classing, either in anticipation of BG 2 EE or while in BG EE if that is feasible?

Also what weapon proficiencies do you recommend?

As for my final party I am thinking of taking Imoen, Neera, Kivan, Coran, and Yeslick. But this can change if I come across characters I like personality wise. Regarding Imoen, I want to dual class her to a mage, since I hear that is wise and want 2 mages, but also gives me an excuse to experiment with dual classing.

Anyway I know a lot of questions! Any help will be appreciated!

Have you played BG before? If not, Cavalier is always a good starting class. It might be a good idea to focus on 2h swords if you intend to take them through to BG2. Or consider axes to overcome the "cannot specialise in ranged weapons" prohibition.

Pure berserkers are pretty much one-trick ponies, that can quickly become dull. Dual classing is tricky unless you know the rules inside out.

    My vote is a Paladin.

I like the Paladin-Cavalier option. The character is tough enough, has a few interesting and useful abilities, but is basically pretty simple to run.
For weapons, I would normally dual wield long swords if I had a dexterity of 15+. If your dexterity is lower than that, armor class could be a problem, so I would do long sword and shield.
I would want another tank with the party you propose, maybe Ajantis instead of Kivan? But otherwise it looks good. If you do go with Coran, I would dual Imoen to Mage as soon as I picked him up (you won't need her thief skills so much once you have him).

Big thing to remember, whatever you choose, the game can be won with any character. And take your time to learn some of the game system and rules set. There can be some frustration as you're learning how to do the things you want, but be patient with yourself and the game, and it will be a lot of fun!

Awesome thanks! Cavalier it is then! Two-handed swords sounds appealing lol, I love big swords! Cool I will also consider another tank in place of Kivan!

I did play Baldurs Gate briefly a couple years back, but went in thinking it was about the same difficulty as Dragon Age Origins and got my butt handed to me! So wanted to plan things out this time!

Hahaha, although rolling to decide my protagonist's fate sounds fun! I think I will do so on my next play though :)

    Thanks again for the help!

    Happy to help!

Two handed sword is also a perfectly doable option. Although I would give the same warning I did about dual wielding, if your dexterity isn't so good, use a shield!

Cavalier wielding a two-handed sword sounds like a really good choice.

I won't spoil you but not every character is available right away. You'll work all this out.

It is definitely beneficial have two arcane spellcasters, sure enough. But you may want to consider leaving Imoen as a pure Thief to ensure that you have thieving skills covered.

Cav is a great choice because the immunities protect you from (arguably) the most frustrating things that enemies do to your CHARNAME.

    Elf sorcerer! They ROCK.

Anyway, the only reason to become a human sorcerer is the better animation. Humans [lick the end of a lolly with some force produced by pouting ones lips] at everything when you do not want to either dual class or play a human-only class.

Although Viconia won't date elves in BG2 (she will go with half-elves, though)

Just rolled 96 on a human berserker, and im loving it. Im planning on dual-ing him to a cleric later, so i can cast some buffs on myself, and watch him plow the battlefields, with his two warhammers. The boots of speed should help close the gap, on thoose pesky ranged units. Pretty fun so far

That sounds like just about the ideal Good party, OP. Neera can cover the casting before you dual-class Imoen, and Coran can pick up the thieving after you dual-class Imoen.

You'll be without divine magic for awhile, as it takes time before you can recruit Coran and Yeslick, but this isn't really a big deal. You can use some combination of Khalid/Jaheira/Minsc/Dynaheir in the meantime.

I guess you could also maybe pick up Ajantis early on, if you don't want to go with the paired-up groups. You can pick him up fairly early.

If you're looking for another tank, I would suggest Minsc - maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but it's just not right to play BG for the first time without him :)
