1) Let cleric cast Doom, then cast Blindness - Doom lowers the creature's saving throws by 2 which makes it easier to land the blind. If both land, you are looking at a whopping -6 thac0 AND -6 AC! You'd be surprised at how useful these simple lvl 1 spells can be at disabling strong enemies!
2) Cast Armor/Shield + Mirror Image and fry stuff with Argannazar's Scorcher! Actually does decent amount of damage, though takes abit of experimenting to get the proper technique down... Failed horribly yesterday and nearly instakilled Charname + Shar-Teel, but that whats makes it fun! xD
I should say that I am normally like the OP - I love fighters / archers / thieves but rarely play Mages in RPGs. But in BG there are so many fun spells to play around with, not to mention how obscenely powerful magic is!
First, do not try to kill me for posting this video, please. Yeah, yeah I know it's WoW but the trailer is kinda epic and the mage in it is a badass. No?
Wizards shine in the following abilities in BG1 : 1 - AoE damage 2 - long range damage 3 - Disablng opponents 4 - Buffing the party 5 - Debuffing the ennemy.
Disabling spells are very powerful in BG1, and yes, Blindness & Glitterdust are very powerful. I played as a gnome illusionist, that was mostly used as a debuffer. And I had Neera as an offensive & haste casting wizard.
My typical party is usually 2 fighter 1 thief 2 wizard 1 healer. with sometime one or the other beeing multi classed or dual classed.
