    Different armor types have different bonuses/penalties vs certain damage types. For the plate mail, its AC 3 against everything except slashing weapons, in which case its 0 vs slashing. Obviously the best protection is full plate because it gets scads of bonuses against every damage type except crushing. And that's part of the reason why blunt weapons are rather excellent: as far as I know, most (all?) armors do not have an AC bonus vs crushing.

    Drizzt's Chainmail +4, for example, is AC 1, but is -1 vs slashing and 3 vs crushing.


    And I think in that screenshot, Jaheira is saying that its almost a slight on Gorion. That's why Khalid tells Jaheira to mind her manners.
