Pic says it all. The message indicates that you have been waylaid by bandits, but its actually a Giant Spider. This happened in Pelvdale, the area where Viconia is.
I haven't once had bandits pop on this map during a random nighttime encounter. You can encounter them walking, but not at night it seems... its always spiders. Possibly a bit more broken than just the descriptor being wrong on the encounter type, since this should be a bandit-heavy region.
