Its been so long that I've basically given up on multiplayer BGEE and now just hope that the feature is available for BG2:EE at launch.
To be quite honest, if BG2:EE comes to a release date, and they haven't finished the server-based multiplayer support for BG:EE, I won't be purchasing their sequel. I'm really hoping we see this functionality come soon, considering it's the only reason I bought this version of the game. I'd also like to point out that this issue with Steam is further souring my opinions.
Should consider improving PR before launching SoA, honestly.

Originally that is the reason I bought BG:EE as well. However, after having played this version of it I find that I'm unable to even play BG2 without the EE features (mainly the smoother graphics that don't look like crap without a resolution mod that makes everything so small it hurts my eyes). That and the fact that they'll be adding about 350,000 words of dialogue (only some of it voiced) into BG2:EE, I will probably purchase the game anyways. I still hope the multiplayer is working by then, though.
Also very eager to begin playing Multiplayer. Given that Trent have said that they have been able to connect without problems through a router, I would have hoped this update would be coming soon. Time will tell! I'll ask around again in a month or so.
I can't give a date/timeframe, but there is a significant gap between "Hey, it works!" and having software that is fully developed, has a suitable UI, has been QA'd and Beta Tested, and is ready for release. It is coming...we promise!
That's all well and good, but I think many of us don't really know how to get a game working with ports and routers and stuff. Would personally love a nice and simple service to connect to other players. I'm sad of course that the MP stuff seem a ways out yet, but I'll be patient and endure. Good things come to those who wait!
Okay well first off allow me to apologize for beating a seemingly dead horse but really? It's been well over a year since this was tweeted.
"@oskargargas Yes, it will be compatible multi-player cross-platform. We had a Mac, iPad and PC joined into a game together. #bgee"
Although I too have had success getting multiplayer to work it has only been when my friends are in the same room with me under the same WIFI connection. While I appreciate what Beamdog's efforts have done to resurrect one of my favorite franchises, the fact that it has gone this long without a dedicated MP system coupled with the lack of transparency surrounding this particular topic as of late, has me feeling a bit cheated. I sure hope to see an update or some feedback about Beamdog's multiplayer soon..
"We are making builds and testing for #Android and Basic Multiplayer matching. Steady progress fixing bugs and making new #BG2EE content" - Trent Oster, 11-May
Made a post in May about this, and I don't want to sound like a broken record, but... Any news on this? Would love to play through this game with my friend before Baldur's Gate II: EE arrives.
We'll have something in the patch. If you bought the game through Beamdog, you'll be able to access the Open Beta (early-mid September) before the patch goes live, which will give you a chance to try it out (and give us a chance to do some stress-testing as well, to make sure it works the way we want it to).
I just started a MP game with 2 friends past weekend, we have about 10 hours in and I have to say we are having an absolute blast. I never knew how fun MP could be in an IE game. I'm really happy with it, and only have had a couple minor bugs. I would say its about 90%-95% as advertised. Looking forward to the next patch
I've tried twice now and I get disconnects every few minutes, which makes the game completely unplayable. I could care less about matchmaking if I can't stay connected, so please tell me you've improved this.
@Alkalurops It should be much more stable, yes. If your internet connection is spotty it will obviously be spotty in-game, but if your connection is steady you shouldn't experience the same issues you see now.
@Dee Both internet connections are decent. We have high available bandwidth (30mbps & 120mbps) and very low latency (at least judging from tens of other games). Clean install. We've tried direct connect and virtual lan, but I still get disconnected a lot from the host. I wonder if this happens with other players...
I've played IWD (1 & 2) in multiplayer and although gameplay was often glitchy (desynchronized spells and other weird stuff), we rarely experienced disconnects...
I used to have the same problem in BG classic and BGEE. The solution I have found is to direct connect the computers, and disconnect them from all wireless networks. This should get you started before the patching comes out to modernize the connection. In '99 the formal excuse for this happening in games was the port not being prioritized or some such.

I know you guys are hard at work on it and I am very grateful for that. I'm just really impatient and anxious. :P
I am just posting to say that if you are waiting until they smooth things out, the multiplayer is really fun!

But we are working actively on it. This is one of the major features that we're working on right now.

Did you both buy the game from Beamdog.com, or are one (or both) of you playing the Steam version?
(If you both have it from Beamdog.com, can you PM me your email addresses?)

Hopefully this helps.
But i still hope things eventually get sorted...
