Montaron and Xzar - Do I need both fro Nashkil Mines?

I just started BGEE. I had Mortoran and Xcar in my party to do the Nashel Mine quest, but Xcar just got killed. Do I need him to complete the quest? Years ago I'd boot both of them out of my party as soon as the quest was done, and currently I don't feel like dragging him along if I don't have too.

Neither are required to complete the mine quest.

Remind you that it is the npc named "Khalid" that needs to get killed, not "Xzar". :)

I initially felt the same about Khalid, but I stuck with him and he turned into an incredibly badass archer. Almost makes up for how cowardly he is. :p

I suppose every npc can be taken to a decent level with some metagaming, though still there are far better (good aligned) archers in the game. However, already at a young age I searched for ways to dispose of Khalid while retaining his wife and I have continued doing so in happiness :)

Khalid is still the best (good) tank in the game thanks to his high dex and con. Stick Gauntlets of Ogre power on him and he'll also be one of your best damage dealers. The only good thing about Jaheira is that you can romance her in BG2. And if your leader has a high charisma, you won't even notice that he's cowardly. He just needs a nurturing environment :)

edit: oh and also, monty and xzar are hilarious!

You dont need to recruit either of them for anything in the game, I went quite some time without playing through the game without them in my party. When i finally did use them in my party however I was delighted, Xzar especially is one of if not the most amusing NPC's in the game to me, that said hes definatly one of the Jan Jansen scenarios, people seem to love or hate him
