Can duke Eltan be killed?

In the conversation where duke Eltan requests investigation of the Iron Throne, CHARNAME asks him to pull back his mercenaries cause they are causing her a lot of trouble. Duke Eltan refuses since no-one knows that he is even hiring a criminal.

Now CHARNAME does not feel so much that she is a criminal, as that she is perhaps less law abiding than average and just regularly winds up in situations where random manslaughter happens to occur. She certainly does not agree with the duke refusing to retreat his mercenaries.

The inevitable consequence is that duke Eltan needs to die, hence he is charged by the gnome Bhaalspawn, a greedy fat dwarf, a sinister blackguard and a rather unusual gnome figure starts slinging bullets at him and for some inexplicable cause he starts screaming he rules all! Now the blackguard is able to damage the duke by poisoning his weapon, but that's about it. He resists all other damage and magic.

I personally would like to question the dukes immortality at this stage in the game, so I am wondering if someone has any hints/tips, if there are any?

If you were the rich and powerful ruler of a magical dukedom, would you risk your neck by confronting a band of infamous evil-doers WITHOUT some form of utterly unfair protection?

If you kill Duke Eltan at that point, then I think the game will become unfinishable because
you need to talk to him again, after investigating the Iron Throne for him, to trigger Chapter 6.

So even if you can figure out a way to kill him, you probably shouldn't do it.

If you do succeed in killing him, then Arkanis Gath ought to teleport in from Athkatla and unstoppably kill you (which is what happens in BG2 if you do something terminally plot-breaking) :-)

I know he will have to appear later in the plot, that's even more reason to find a way to kill him. :D

@IkMarc when BG1 was released there were no ways to poison Duke Eltan, the Ghost Knights, etc.
Because all the poison dmg sources could be avoided by a successful saving-throw.
Now a good number of Poison Weapon paired with Arrows of Detonation (100% chance to hit), on critical hit or by stunning the target with the Stupifier before hitting (again, 100% chance to hit a stunned target), can kill them.

@Gallowglass actually I always killed Renal Bloodscalp for his loot (Boots of Speed, Shadow Armor, Short Sword+3 + good xp) while simply tanking Arkanis with Protection from Magical Weapons ;)

In original BG2 I used to loot Renal after returning from Spellhold, because then Arkanis didn't interfere. (Hmmm ... Arkanis not interfering once it was no longer plot-breaking to attack the Shadow Thieves may have been an effect of Baldurdash or Dudleyfix, I'm not quite sure whether totally-vanilla BG2 worked the same way.)

When working for Bodhi and meeting the "normal" Arkanis Gath, yes, you could tank him. However, as I recall it, that wouldn't work when he appeared in his special incarnation as a broken-plot-game-stopper, because then he wore a belt-of-minimum-HP (like Imoen's belt in the starting dungeon), so you could hit him for any amount of damage and he'd still never go down. Although I recall cheesier tactics working, such as transforming into a mind-flayer and INT-draining him to 0, he wasn't immune to that ... but then you were still stuck with a broken plot and couldn't finish.

I never said I killed him when fighting Renal, I said I could tank him with PfMW :)
And yes, you can only kill him by reducing his stats to 0, in this case with Mind Flayer transformation. But it's hard to have lvl9 spells before SpellHold, unless you are soloing the game.
