Background activity during gameplay

I'm having some weird issues as stated in the title. While playing, every few seconds the game freezes for a fraction of a second. I very, very much doubt it's a hardware issue, but I did notice that the freezing gets worse when I have other programs running in the background that access my home network. As my "My Documents"-folder is located on a network drive (and consequently the BGEE save folder as well) could it be that the game itself accesses information "in the background" in that user folder during play? It doesn't happen if I scroll while on pause.
