@belgarathmth - Neera summoned the damn thing in her own quest battle, as her first and only surge, then proclaimed "Casting isn't as easy as I make it look". I knew Ekandor had a point!

If i had run a no reload game with neera in that screenshot, i would be serious tempted to break my own rules. By the way i learn something new now. Wild Mages and no-reload games do not work well togheter.

hmm... Nalia ... well she is rich man girls... and nobility most often have educated classes... it is very common... I would say wizard (and specialty wizard), cleric Paladin and fighter would be counted as educated classes in DnD.

In Nalias case... Transmuter or Enchanter would be the perfect choise
Enchanter = she charm her way out of the castle and makes people that she encounter to forget that she left the castle

Transmuter = expert escape artist class.. polymorth yourself plus thief abilities and no one can find you ;)

I never played through with her, but I like her, too. It's kinda sad she's mostly seen as "cheap Imoen clone". Making her a sorcerer (or bard with pickpocket bonus, Knock and Invisibility) would have been a lot more interesting. Sorcerer would also have given her a class no other NPC has (not counting Baeloth, obviously).

As for specialist/Clerics. Their specialization only prevents them from learning arcane spells of their opposed school. Clericial spells are divinely inspired and don't require learning, so they come built in, unless there's an alignment conflict that prevents them casting a particular spell (holy word vs unholy word as an example)

Imoen: With her thief background I think of her as an Illusionist.

Aerie: Being taught by Quayle, she should be an Illusionist as well.

Nalia: She should be an Abjurer or an Invoker. With her low wisdom she can't be an Abjurer, so make that an Invoker.

I think I will mod Nalia into a Sorcerer and give her Knock and Invisibility when BG2EE comes out. :)

Nalia must be a dualed class thief to mage, cos it's on her background the use of her swift abilities to leave her home with stealth to help the poors, just like her mother. If they accept a dualed class thief to sorcerer (blocked dual, only for the NPC) then ok, otherwise will be difficult turn her in a sorcerer without screwing the original content.

I'm just going to turn her into a sorcerer anyway. No Dual-class. I can headcanon the rest.

Canon Nalia's bio: "She has been educated and taught the magical arts, as per her dead mother's wishes, but Nalia states that her years of sneaking out of the castle have taught her the other side of life as well."

She has studied magical arts as a wizard does, she really does not have a sorcerer background. Her story and in-game banters excludes the possibility of her having innate sorcerous abilities, and implies she has some sort of rogue-like experience (e.g. there's even a banter during her quest with Yoshi "teaching" her about detecting traps). I'm not sure giving her the Knock spell is enough to remove the thief class and pretend she still perfectly fit her story and banters.

Short story, she definitely is some sort of thief/mage. Humans cannot be multiclassed, so if I had to assigg a thief kit I'd surely pick the Swashbuckler (would Nalia backstab anyone?) and if I could instead pick a mage kit I'd probably say Transmuter (she wants to "change" things, doesn't she? :D Knock and polymorphing into a small rat could have helped her sneaking out of the castle from time to time).

When it comes to Imoen instead I really don't know... Her canon ending kinda implies she's not a pure thief anymore. Again if I had to assign a thief kit I'd surely pick the Swashbuckler, but I'd never assign her a school of specialization. Bard would almost work (and be cool) but it does not fully fit her story and banters.
