Whaddaya think? could this be done?

I have no clue how to make a class, but this idea just popped into my head:

Marshal/Warlord (Fighter Class)

Most martial characters wade into the thick of battle, crushing their enemies with their weapons or shoot at enemies from afar with ranged weapons of one type or another. The marshal knows the truth of synergy, that the whole is far greater than simply the sum of its parts; together with his group, he allows them to be far more than they could ever be.

Alignment:
Any

Race:
Any

Advantages:
* Gain the following abilities to be used once per day:

1st: Remove Fear, Friends
3rd: Free Action
4th: Slow, Horror
6th: Haste, Strength of One
7th: Defensive Harmony
8th: Mass Heal
10th: Chaotic Commands, Improved Haste
12th: Greater Malison
14th: Power Word Silence
17th: Mantle
20th: War Cry (as per the high level ability)
24th: Improved Mantle
30th: Wail of the Banshee

* Dex and Cha +1 on character creation (Dex bonus to help reaction adjustment mirroring leaders need to react quickly on the battlefield, Cha bonus to reflect 'front face' of parties)

Stat minimums:
As per fighter of the same race

Disadvantages:
Can only put four points into any weapon, cannot wear armour greater than Splint mail, Uses d8 for hitpoints, cannot dual class (?)

I like the concept of the Warlord class. Especially in D&D 4E. The Commander's Strike at-will ability was simple, yet fun. Instead of spending round to attack by yourself you could order an ally to make a melee basic attack with bonuses from the Warlord's Intellect-.

So I like the concept, but unfortunately I also agree that

I have no clue how to make a class

I would like to see this class get one use of ability (per 3 levels of progression) that increases the numbers of one character's attacks by 1 in next 3 rounds. Let's say - with minor bonus from his Charisma-. In that round the Warlord could not attack by himself.

Taunting enemies to attack him, minor healing/invigorating options, and fe. party getting +1THAC0 while his HP are below 50% should be sufficient additions for the new type of Fighter. Moreover it could be the first type of Martial class, besides archers, that doesn't necessarily need maxed Strength- score.

All your comments sound great - to be honest, I created the class so in theory it was as easy as possible to create (abilities instead of spells, actual spells instead of new ones, restrictions and attributes that are already present through other classes etc)

Fingers crossed some beautiful wonderful person who is epic awesome at creating kits will pick this up.

You could be a marshal and yell at every kid that you go by "get in the house carl!"

Seems to have a metric ton of advantages, including some crazy magical abilities that I see no real explanation for other than being powergamer favorites

Okay, that's probably true, I wanted to create a class that basically specialised in AOE buffs and debuffs, but at the same time was still a fighter class. I'd love suggestions for different abilities instead of the ones I put up :)

FYI I don't think it's possible to give kits different hit dice than their underlying class.

Ah - I thought Dragon Disciple had different HD to a Sorc?

You know, I had just written up half a post of suggestions, when I realized something: you're basically talking about a bard, here. Less hit dice than a fighter, and less weapon skill, but smarter and increases morale and can apply magical buffs to his companions, and debuffs to opponents.

The idea was to create a fighter class that was a bit more focused on buffing and debuffing - much like the Dwarven defender is based on physical Defence over physical offense. A bard is still a bit too flimsy to me - the choice between Magic or armour (at least in BG1) and still not great weapon pips.....

You can basically get this exact build by playing a Skald.

...but I will give one a go. Strangely, Skald is the only bard I havent tried, so thanks for the suggestion!

the original bard in 1e was like a fighter/mage/thief

You needed to gather up Druid levels before becoming a Bard! and then Fighter or Thief, I'm not sure.
