Please help with Chant and Aid spell bug

I just bought the game of steam started playing and encountered an issue with the two spells mentioned. Throwing the chant spell gives only the animation, no possitive/negative effect on ally/foe, no icon on the teams portraits. The aid spell on the other hand gives the bonus mentioned in its description but once again it does not add the icon to npc portrait. Please help, I have searched the forum and apparently modders or devs have been working on this issue before, they even added a zip file with *.spl files claiming that this resolves the issue - apparently it did not. Unfortunately I have no idea how to implement such a file. Please help.
