How Does the Halberd Update Work?

I'm referring to Halberds getting the Either Slashing or Piercing damage types.

1) Does it need to be a new character?

2) Does it automatically do the best damage type or is there a button you hit or what?

I think it has to do with the swing animation, one animation slashes, one stabs.

So you can't just choose one or the other or it automatically picks the best one for the situation.
