@Urd1en and @atcDave. Fascinating. Both of you have assumed that the opposite alignment limits itself by the act of defining itself. Hence, the admonition "don't cage yourself". Of course, you're both right about that.

Ah ha. How about the Chaotic Neutral aligned player saying, "Hey guys. I can change my mind whenever I want. See, no cage" ? lol. (at least that's my guess).

I think anyone playing exactly the alignment they want to is free of the cage.

@franco: I do remember the reason I found out I can dual Xzar. I often read - when fanboying over how awesome dual Xzar is - that is total meta knowledge and no-one would ever even know it can be done without reading about it first. Not true. In my run back then, I had made a charname specifically to be friends with Xzar. My logic was: I am a sheltered kid who just lost a mentor, and I have no idea what to do. Logical first step: Find a new mentor. Xzar is the one doing the talking when he and Monty offer their help, so he was obviously a good choice. At some point, I noticed that his actual wisdom is lower than charname's. That's why I gave him the wisdom tome. I think I only had the charisma tome before that and gave it to charname, with no obvious change or effect. Xzar got a tempting button to dual class, so I just clicked it, was excited he could also be a cleric and hence an even better fit as a mentor... except, of course, I had no clue how dualing worked and that he would become a level 1 cleric and have his mage levels locked for a long long time.

It made no sense to dual him from a meta/powergaming point of view, but this was how I discovered I can dual class NPCs and the importance of stats/tomes. So I experimented with that in my next runs and slowly figured out who should or shouldn't be dualed. Of course, in a thief run, I dualed Shar-Teel to thief because the temptation of the button was irresistable, and had no frontliner except Kagain left...

@KidCarnival. No body better put a button near you. Really great story.

Because I tend to play a Thief, and I like to have the 'continuity NPCs' with me (Viconia, Edwin, now Dorn), I usually end up with extra thieves and clerics due to dualing Shar and Xzar.
