First run

Just got to playing this game and already hit a roadblock :p
Namely I can't decide what to play as. I always fancied playing a dwarf but reading about hadn't noticed that much enthusiasm from others (they sux in comparison as far as I read)
Still I want to believe it will work out later on and was wondering what are other people's experiences with dwarven defenders.
If it's a bad choice maybe a more action packed class? Wont mind at all if being a Human is the way to go to have a more pleasurable run.

Dwarf is a neat choice, you will enjoy great saving throws, and will become the most durable fighter tank imaginable. I had a dwarven defender in Black Pits game and he was a true tank, my casters and archers hid behind him and together they demolished everything.

One hitch, though. Dwarves can not have romance with NPCs in BG2, don't know about BG:EE or BG2:EE.

If you want to be a dwarf, be a dwarf! The new dwarven defender kit is arguably a recipe for the best (and certainly the most resilient) front-line tank in the game, with the opportunity for massive hit points. So there'll be no shortage of action there.

If I were doing a dwarf play-through, I'd consider doing a multiclassed fighter/cleric as well. A big range of spells without compromising on your close combat abilities.

I don't think you'll have to wait too long for a mod/hack that will let Dwarves romance anything they want to in BG2. Or there's a Nalia Romance mod - surely to be converted for EE - and I believe she's up for some action with the little people.

how can a race suck, unless it doesn't offer the class you want to play? actually for the core three classes (rogue, fighter, cleric) you're best choice is with a dwarf for the epic saves

Ultimately you will have the most fun if you pay a race and class that interests you. Every combination is completely playable and you can win the game with it. Pay no attention to the power gamers.

Dwarves are fine and have a number of advantages. Great saves. You can get 20 con in the first game for regenerating hp goodness.

I was reading over the Dwarven Defender kit. It looks like a lot of tankey fun and goodness to me. I'd probably set him up to use the Hammer of Thunderbolts (+5. Sets Str to 25. Other stuff) in his main hand and that flail that gives damage resistance in the offhand. If I had any weapon proficiency points left at that point I'd work on axes. (Note those weapons are in BG2.)

Congrats to have the opportunity to start from scratch...I envy you.

My first ever playthrough some 80 years ago was a dwarven fighter, and I looooved him

Suggestion, don't pay to much notice to what you read in the forums...or even better, dont read them until after a playthrough...or if you get badly stuck.

The best with BG is the experience YOU get by playing YOUR game, not by copying someone elses character build and then go hunting for the optimal equipment for that build.

Go and explore the world with fresh eyes......and as I might have said, how I envy you.

Yeah, knowing that BG2 has a lot of enemies which will curb stomp any non-berserker/non-Mage (no save) does limit one's choice.
