Subcontracting/Delegating minor adventures

The petrified adventurers in Abazigal's Lair give you one of the best subquests in the BG series IMO. You get to hire them to find you a Gauth Eyestalk in a fun role reversal - You are the quest-giver! They've got well written dialogue and it's always enjoyable being surprised by a game's meta-awareness.

I'd like to see another opportunity or two to delegate some minor adventuring, as long as it was well written & fun. It could be an opportunity to expand BG2 strongholds or similar. I tend to hoard magic weapons I've got no use for but don't want to sell, and the opportunity to give away an unused but lore-rich weapon to another adventurer or the captain of my stronghold's guard as a reward would feel right somehow.

This isn't a demand, or even a strong request. Just a suggestion to see if anyone else thinks it's a good idea.

You know, that has always been something that bothered me. Giving weapons away to the folk of a village you saved so they can defend themselves, to your home guards or to other adventurers (who you might or might not meet again) - that would be great!

I guess that letting the player to sit down for a moment, and to watch NPCs doing something on their own (according to your former actions) is always a lot of fun (let alone having any meta-gaming elements). I remember when some time ago during a PnP session of The Witcher our game master gave us an opportunity to lead some caravan to the distant city (quite refreshing after all of these "defend the caravan" adventures I've been through ;) ). What I really loved in BG2 strongholds idea was the possibility of telling NPCs what to do (especially in case of the theatre, but also in the thieves guild), and I think that has already been quite a refreshing element of the game, which (as I hope) can be easily developed.

. . . I think it's bullshit that the one time you can give weapons away in BG2 you get in trouble for it. Yeah, I'd have liked have been able to expand upon why I gave the three kids those weapons and not the beer, but the game just smacks you on the hand and says 'Bad!' and I think I read somewhere that if you're a ranger you can become a fallen ranger for doing this.

I mean, seriously, they live in a village that was just under attack by supernatural critters, and seems to have irregular problems with monsters and orcs and such. Then they get on my case for giving those kids the means to defend themselves? Whatever.

There is a funny little section in NWN 2 where a group of low level adventurers do this to the party at crossroad keep - You can choose quests to send them of on, and they send notes reporting there results and the odd magic item.
It was good fun but obviously there would be no point making the whole game like this - you are supposed to be the adventurers :p

@ajwz I know the fun of the game is in adventuring, dungeoneering and so on, but what's the point in being lord of the De'Arnise keep (or whatever) if you do all the work yourself?

I'm being daft and I know it. The petrified adventurers quest is a cool little joke in Abazigal's lair and no more. Being able to donate your hand-me-down legendary gear to budding adventurers or you stronghold guards might be a nice touch though.

Pfft, not only did I give them weapons, I gave them beer too.

Still managed to keep my cabin.
