Strange alignment change

I completed BG1 + 2+ToB with the same character, a fighter mage, imported from Easytutu-BG1 to BG2. Went from chaotic neutral into neutral evil in Hell as expected. However, when playing a similiar setup character, a neutral good ranger/cleric, he changed alignment upon entering Spellhold to chaotic neutral! I pretented to be insane to the Pirate Lord - what's-his-name guy, and the alignment change happened. Luckily I had a save so I could test further: If I used Minsc in the dialogue options instead, (because he was in my party) my alignment remained neutral good.
