Or does using Kai bring you out of the shadows?

    Of course you can use it and it will not bring you out of the shadows.

    duration for kai is extremely short.

    Yes, however I'm pretty sure you can't use Kai and Assassination together at the same time once you get to HLAs

    You can, but Mislead->Backstab is even better, since it won't drop until the illusion is killed. You can also cast it at the start of a map, park it on the edge, and then chunk everyone with impunity.
