Black powder

RenshtalisRenshtalis Member Posts: 136
I have no idea how hard it would be but is there any chance of adding black powder weapons? For example the epic ness of a swashbuckler going into battle with a brace of pistols, letting off two shots then running in with his duel wielding cutless attack would be totally sweet! Also with the gnome affinity for tech, they could get some kind of bonus using BP weapons. Just throwing the idea out there.

Well, 2e/2.5 does have firearms rules supplements but I don't think they exist in the Forgotten Realms setting at the time the games are set. It would be difficult to find a way to make them work (outside of easter eggs like the Big Metal Unit)

Bummer, I just thought since gnomes had flying ships n there were swashbuckling pirates we could have blunderbuss' n pistols.

Firearms in the Forgotten Realms Settings are a jealously kept secret of the gnome of the Lantan (big island in the South West of Faërûn (in the middle of the Trackless Sea)). Worshipping Gond (god of knowledge) these gnomes despise magic relying mostly on technology to solve their daily problems.

If I remember well, as gunpowder is a Gond favour granted only to them, I would doubt any human (or even other gnome) could easily find any on the baldur's gate area of the sword coast.

however ... In BG2 you actually encounter some lantanese gnome in the Waukyne promnade... maybe you could ask them :-D

So perhaps a swashbuckler quest with the gnomes for a brace of pistols... NIIIIICE!

I rather think that you are overestimating your ability to turn ones against his own allegiances. For instance, even if someone saved your life, it is unlikely that you would consider rewarding him with the very secret of the defences of your homeland (and a sacred gift). They don't trade gunpowder either.

We are left with two solutions, then.

    Torture... or blackmail.

    :D

Guns in Baldur's Gate? Seriously people, seriously?

@ZelgadisGW, I wish I could press on the Agree button more than once...

Well.. as has been pointed out; there are things like airships, telescopes/observatories and a significant amount of various technical machinery/inventions already existing in the BG world. I wouldn't view the inclusion of some not-so-accurate/powerful firearms as a lore/immersion breach.

@Aranneas people had already asked for dinosaurs on this forum, so I doubt I'll ever be surprised.

Well duh. How do you think we get the chest high walls into the game? Can't have Irenicus destroy every level ya know.

@Aranneas I believe I've said that I wouldn't be surprised had anyone asked for this, even if it is stupid, retarted or impossible.

I played a gun nut dwarf in Arcanum. Gunpowder weapons were so underpowered in that game, one could barely gather enough raw ingredients to manufacture the gunpowder and bullets. Of course, using a gun against a magic user was a lot of fun, conceptually that is. In retrospect, Arcanum had so much promise but failed to deliver in just about everything.

I was making a joke. I'm sorry it didn't come across. in my sleep-deprived state I actually found it fairly clever.

Well, you could get something out of it, but it involved ignoring your quests and spending a month or two in Tarant, running from the shops to the garbage bins, crafting guns and using the money from selling those to get new plans. When you get the Elephant Gun or the Tesla Rifle, things start to look up. Before that though...it's rough times. And it still doesn't beat Harm, a level 1 spell.
    Unbalanced game. Fun though.

I really liked the atmosphere of the game and made it to tarant. Exploring the city was fun as I recall. However, I came to a dead end in the game by getting stuck in a dungeon, I remember giant rats, or moles... I couldn't bring myself to restart the game from the beginning ;).

Some people just want to see Baldur's Gate burned to ashes, and steampunk-fantasy like the warcraft franchise erected in its place...
