Find Familiar question

So I'm a NE Blade and I cast it and got a Dust Mephit or something. I didn't realize I'd lose a point of CON if it dies, so is there a way to unsummon it and use it every once in awhile, or is it a permanent companion now?

You gain hit points while its alive. You can talk to it and pick it up and put it in your pack.

    Ah nice that's useful!

Yeah, a lot of us mages see "Find Familiar" as a spell that exchanges an inventory slot for 10 hp.

Plus familiars have useful skills, spell, or immunities depending on what you get.
You just need to be SUPER CAREFUL with them. XD

They have good THAC0, and resistances, but are too fragile with low hp. Critical hits kill them. Anyone with low hp and no critical hit protection is begging to be killed. I send my thief guy to melee an xvart. My thief has 12 hp, so is safe, or so I think. If he gets wounded I can pull him back, and gulp a potion I think. The xvart goes for the head and crticial strikes for 12 damage (which is the maximum for 2d6, critical hit with short sword) and kills my char. (On core rules) Every. Single. Time.

Only 6 hit points now, alas.

Well, bugger. When we said we wanted a patch, Beamdog, this was not what we meant! :P

6 hp in BG1 is still pretty great, especially since Find Familiar was never in BG1 to begin with. Presumably it'll be back to 10 (or was it 12?) in BG2EE.

Speaking of BG2EE, does anyone know if a familiar from BGEE will import into BG2EE? Or is it assumed to have been killed when you were kidnapped? In the latter case, you should lose a point of Constitution when you import if you have a familiar.

You could get find familiar in BG1 if you use Tutu. It really would make or break your 1st level wizard.

but to the OP, yeah, I keep mine in my pack like 99% of the time. It is decent in a few select situations, but by no means use it as a standard summonable 'Scout' or something. Yer pet gets lunched and you are in a world of hurt.

@belgarathmth lol, I wish I could do that too, he is a very decent guy with a horrible tendency to die in every other battle. That's why I don't talk to him until my pc is lvl 4-5 or higher. Tis way he will join with 20+ hp and won't be one shotted by enemies. Ofcourse, heavy hitter enemies like ogres can still insta kill him with a lıcky critical, but he comes with sling proficiency at lvl 4+. Coupled with his fast movement+dexterity it is best to kite and sling such enemies to death.

Folks complaining about Rasaad: Get him an ioun stone. You can buy one for a few hundred from High Hedge. It'll protect him from critical hits, even though it doesn't say it will. Trust me, I've tested this.

@the_spyder: Yeah, you could get it in Tutu. But Tutu, ultimately, is a mod, and so it really can't be viewed as part of the original material.

@Jarrakul - True enough. But really, does anyone play true BG1 - vanilla?

I did before BG:EE was released...

I really doubt they would force -1 constitution on you.
But I hope they will upgrade the familiars a bit for BG2EE. There have already been some discussions here about familiars, and while they are pretty decent in BGEE, many of their revamped abilities and to hit basically worth nothing in BG2, and their hp will be begging for an insta-kill without a critical hit, so they will even more be just a minus-one-backpack-space-HP-buff.

Looks like familiars will be upgraded in BG2EE:

What would make a familiar so much more viable is if they leveled up with you. Not anything significant and certainly not a combatant. But like the Cat gets a speed increase, or a Pseudo Dragon got invisibility, a quaist can cast a magic missile, little things like that to make them more useful. And I want to name my pets too.
