Help with Sorcerers.

I've been looking over the forums at the Sorcerer class in BG:EE and how when it comes to stats they are completely different from Mages, like how they don't need high INT like Mages do. So what I want to know is what would be the proper build for the Sorcerer class and if I should be Sorcerer or Mage.

go for wild mage or mage specialist like conjurer or ilusionist
if you are newbie you will do some wrong spell selection and you sorcerer will be weak

or if you like the challange go for the sorcerer and pick a spells you like

If you are going for a pure arcane caster, Sorcerers are stronger than Mages since they can cast more spells between each 'rest'. The benefit of Mages is that

    1) You can customise them more with regards to which specific spells to learn.

    2) They can be multi-class or dual-class.

Intelligence is annoyingly useless in the BG games, and even less important for Sorcerers compared to Mages since Sorcerers don't need to memorize scrolls (the success rate depends on intelligence) to learn new spells.

So actually a Sorcerer has very few stat requirements. You can roll a very cheesy stat-line that maximises Str, Dex and Con, and have just 9+ for Intelligence for the purpose of using wands.

That said, I always try to have balanced or 'realistic' characters, so if I rolled a Sorcerer, I'd probably go for the exactly same stats I used for my Fighter/Mage.

    Str: 15
    Dex: 17
    Con: 15
    Int: 18
    Wis: 10
    Cha: 13

You should play both a bit and see what you like better, but I gravitate towards the Sorceror. I appreciate how relatively low maintenance they are.

Personally I think the cautions about this class for a beginner are real, but perhaps a bit overstated. Just read the spell descriptions carefully and you will be okay. There are so many scrolls and wands in this game, that if you choose a less than optimal mix you can usually recover. Generally, don't take one time cast spells (e.g. Find Familiar), spells that don't scale well with levels (Color Spray), or spells that have a better version later (Armor) and you should be okay.

Of course if you plan to play the character through BG2 and ToB, then I'd recommend looking up a guide to help your spell selection.

Since PnP actually lists Charisma as a Sorceror's prime requisite, I usually create them that way in BG.

Sorcerors don't actually have a stat that makes their spell casting better. High Wisdom helps casting the Wish spell in the second game. Charisma helps with NPC reactions and Store Prices. Strength, Dex, and Con is more helpful than Intelligence which doesn't do anything for the sorcerer.

about cations and newbies i think you are very wrong because difference between sorcerer and mage is so little that newbie will not see and he will have better time having 10 spells to try than 1 because of sorc restrictions
