Most comfortable character?

Good day, everyone.

I'm currently in the middle of BG:EE(finished MOST EPICEST DUNGEON EVAR Durlag's tower, and went to Baldur's gate) with my fighter/mage, and thinking about BG2(not sure if EE, b/c of recent unfortunate events)

And the problem is f/m is inconvenient - sure he really shines under buffs and can tank through anything(well, except Chess-rush, I suppose) almost without hp loss. But without buffs it's really hopeless and little critters chip away his hits and I'm forced to switch armors to make him half-decent. Frankly, most of the time I played him as plain warrior with identification spells.

So, I'm not sure I want to continue playing him further.
Thus, I'm considering some other options. What I can see is:
0) Stick with f/m in hope that at some level I'll get enough spells to have him almost constantly buffed or getting something better than Robe of Archmage as armor?
1) Mage with a small dip into fighter(8-10?) for bow GM and thac0, leaving close combat for others and raining arrows/bolts in small fights, while unleashing full mage potential in serious battles.
2) Same, but Swashbuckler(SD if EE, if SD fixed) instead of fighters as utility - but their thac0 is laughable, compared even to dual f/m, not to speak about multi. Will such a char be able to even hit common monsters reliably?
3) I'm afraid to include this homunculus, but.. F/M/T?

Which of these ways would result in the most comfortable playthrough? Or maybe I should consider something else(although, I'm pretty sure, I'd like to have some magicKs up my sleeve - I've played BG2 somewhere around 8 years ago and still remember this nice feeling, when a dragon dies in two turns under a barrage of resistance debuffs plus finger of death)

Also a couple of questions:
Are there any benefits of pure mage compared to thief(4-8)->mage, except for specialisation? It seems, dual here is an obvious choice...
Would low caster level of multi F/M hurt much, if I try to employ him as one of two primary casters in the group?
Are there any rumours on new kits, like Thief-Slinger(Halfling Defender?:), or such, which might fit just perfectly in mage duals?

Also, I would like to wish the best of luck to developers in their copyright struggle. What they did with BG is absolutelly amazing. I had to ditch BG a couple years ago due to eye-killing graphics, and would never experience Durlag's Tower if not for their work.

It's a pity, that big guys prefer to roll with some half-decent new RPGs, rather than remaking classics with new technology. BG:3D-3.5E would be a killer...

1.) When you're not casting spells on your F/M you should have on you a full plate. There shouldn't be a difference between a fighter and F/M when it comes to surviving. Remove full plate and buff yourself with your defensive spells, put on your full plate again and fight.

2.) Most comfortable is probably a berserker. Click on your rage and go into fights and that's it.

    probably f/t or berserker/theif
    or f/c or berserker/cleric

    bg2
    f/m
    ranged t/m

Single-class is easily the most comfortable. I'm not sure if you're willing to go that route, but you've got far less to juggle. Straight Fighter is by far the easiest to use. Berserker or Barbarian give a bit more variety without changing it significantly. Swashbuckler is like a stripped-down, more comfortable F/T
