Dismissing/re-recruiting player made NPCs

Having played BG1 several times before (a long time ago), I'm thinking about starting a new game using only pre-gen MP chars in SP mode.
However, as I understand that many quests are started by the in-game NPCs, I am concerned that I'll miss out on quests if I run a full 6-man pre-gen party.
If I were to do this, is there a way where I can dismiss 1-2 of my pre-gen chars to invite the game NPCs, just to start (and complete I guess) the related quests, and then re-invite my pre-gens? If possible, where do they go once dismissed? Stay in the same place I left them?
Thanks in advance.

Suppose one option would then be to create a core 4-man party which could then invite/dismiss NPCs as quests are started/completed.
I know that certain quests are initiated by NPCs, such as the two NPCs you meet shortly after leaving Candlekeep, asking you to go to Nashkel. If I ignored them and travelled to Nashkel with my pre-gen party, would I still be able to pick up the quests there?
For example Montaron/Xzar mention the Nashkel Mines, but so does Jaheira/Khalid, and given the Nashkel Mine is central to the game plot, I'm sure it would've come up even if you didn't recruit any of them.
Another example is Coran and the Wyverns. He is the first to raise the issue, but you can do the quest and collect the reward without him.
Edit: Oh just as I posted comment, I remembered Eldoth and Skie, where you need Eldoth to rescue Skie... There might be others like that I guess... but nothing significant.
