Constitution keeps falling, started at 17 now at 2

Hi guys and gals

So the title kind of sums it up pretty good.
I started with Constitution 17 and it kept falling until it hit 2
So now I have like 3 HP and die with almost every hit
I went to a Temple, cause I thought it would be a curse!
Turnt out, I was wrong. It does not change when I sleep,
change gear (which btw. is pretty normal stuff) or heal with whatever magic.
I don't know if there is like .. sheesh .. an STD you can get or something
or if it's a bug. I played BG before and never had this problem, so I'm kind
of out of options here.

Any help would be much appreciated. Cause starting the Game once again
is not an option!

Yeah... I hope you've not been using your familiar as cannon fodder...

Well ... damn! First time playing a mage hehe ... ^^''
so familiar cannon fodder, bad! Got it! Is there any way to reverse that?
    Oooor am I screwed?

You are screwed unless you cheat. In which case it's an easy fix.

If you are playing BG EE, download EE Keeper. If you are playing BG 2, download Shadowkeeper.

Familiars are handy for giving an otherwise squishy class a slight hp buff (you get 1/2 of the hp of the familiar as a bonus for your own hp). Some have very specific utility value, like soaking up Basilisk petrification attacks, but none of them should be used in general combat, cos the loss of a familiar is pretty serious, as you've found out :P

yeah well, I don't do cheats!
But thanks anyway. SO starting the game once more it is!

    That's the spirit ;)

I have a no cheating policy too. But I still have Shadowkeeper installed to fix the occasional problem that might arise due to a bug or flawed design. It's really easy to use and doesn't mess with your saves. I also used it to deliberately reduce my Charname's Constitution at the start of my BG 2 run cos he was getting too tanky for my liking... but not by as much as your mage :D

Well I understand why you would do that, I mean when we are rangers in every mmo out there, pets are cannon fodder but yea dnd rules are unforgiving like that :)
Every time you start again you learn something so its really no that bad, go for it!

Best place for your familiar is in your pack :)

But not in your lunchbox. Most ironic familiar death ever.

Then why did he have to cast magic missile?

I didn't really use it as cannon fodder per se, but to explore stuff. And sometimes it just stept on traps, or ran into a horde of enemies!
And I don't really play MMO's, don't really like those.
I just never used this familiar spell before, so I never noticed it before!

well ... but now I know xD

Galstaff, Sorcerer of Light, knew things were looking grim when his Find Familiar spell yielded a McNugget Chicken.

    Melicamp, is that you?

I'm reminded of a scenario that I was involved in when I played (Loooooong time ago). My DM had us face off against another party. Our mage let loose with a lightning bolt against the enemy caster. When the dust cleared, a slightly charred wizard stopped, reached into his robe, pulled out a very blackened and crispy toad and cried "Hughbert!! Nooooooo!" (actually I don't remember the familiar's name, but the sentiment was the same).

Needless to say, we had fried frogs legs for dinner that night.

Seriously though, I guess I was just raised on books like Jhereg and the like such that I would never tread a familiar as fodder. They are friend and companion to the Wizard, not someone to be thrown to the wolves just to test the water. Yeah, I get a bit too involved in my party I admit. (LOL)

Actually familiars are pretty buff in early BG1. Mine could solo Ankheg's and Basilisks alike. Of course, I play BGT and I believe BGEE toned them down to be more suitable for BG1.
