So, how are we handling spoilers?

stkayestkaye Member Posts: 22
Just a quick question on this - people are being very free and easy (even in thread titles) with major plot details from BG1 and 2 on here, and that's fine by me (since I was playing these in the 90s...).

But should we maybe worry about the 15 year old iPad user on here who has literally never played these and has no idea what a (SPOILER!) Bhaalspawn is?

Just asking.

Well, all the first time players will have to avoid reading here if they don't want to spoil the ending about boo's ultimate ascent as the next god of murder

Well yeah. So sayeth the wise Alaundo.

I guess the etiquette on this is weird when the material is more than ten years old. But we wouldn't spoil a classic novel for anyone either...

    Boo?!?!

    Tiax rules ALL!

A sticky with a general warning might be a good idea though.

Something along the lines of: "New to Baldur's Gate? - READ THIS"

Inside: "Stop reading, close your browser"

It could be like a little multiple-choice quiz.

"Does Tiax rule: a) you b) himself c) the city of Athkatla d) all?"

Too many fails and the browser tab self-closes or links them to a video of kittens or something.

I think it's polite to just pop *Spoilers* in the thread title, but to be honest people wailing about you putting spoilers (which as I am sure us vets can all agree on is particuarly easy, as we all kinda assume we're all brothers and sisters in awesomesauce BG fandom!), long after the title is out is a little churlish.

In my real life, all my friends are on fair warning that I'll leave talking about something for several months to give everyone a chance to experience it fresh (unless I know the person I'm talking about has experienced it too), but after a point I just stop worrying about it, as in my opnion if you care that much about a story be it film, book, tv or videogame you'll do your best to experience it asap.

Besides I find it a little rude that people should expect you to track what they have or haven't read, seen or played ad infinitum until they get off their asses and actually experience it. That said deliberately setting to spoil something for someone is just not cool. So yeah if you think to, pop a spoiler tag up on here all well and good, but I think at this stage people coming here are going to have to realize there are finding a very vocal and devoted community to fit into, and in this case the onus is on them to try to avoid anything that sounds too spoilery, if they are that fussed about it.

I agree with OP and @Samiel... maybe 'spoiler' should be put into the titles when that is at risk.

Cool, although I think the ettiquette here shouldn't be to come down hard on those that don't.

We're "handling" spoilers in that I will personally Supreme Power Attack Great Cleave with a +5 acid burst greataxe (while Frenzied and Raging, of course) through any party responsible for spoiling any of the narrative to my friends who are new to the franchise. I'm serious. Vorpal serious.

*phew* Thank the heavens this is a AD&D 2nd Edition forum and not a 3rd edition one, otherwise your Power Attack Great Cleaving might carry some weight! :P Seriously, you might want to offer them a note of caution, this is a forum which at the moment is going to have the population comprising people who have played the game many times, and love it to death, and for a 14 year old game it's going to be unlikely that everyone will think to think to put *spoiler* everywhere.

Bah, curse your crotchety old 2nd Edition. Fine! I'll just use Rage and a +10 hackmaster at 5 attacks per round!

In all seriousness, though, my pals are not likely to frequent this forum. Being new to the game, they're not the hardcore fans I am. I'm more worried about some idiot at Kotaku or PCGamer tossing out spoilers.
