Specialist mage - 1 more spell slot per level, cannot cast spells from the opposite school

Imoen can only dual to a Mage, so...

Really? O.o I clicked on the specialist wizard one and a list containing Conjurer, Illiusionist, etc appeared...

    What's going on then? :/

Specialist mages are still "Mage" as far as class system is concerned. They're essentially kits, not different classes as such.

So when you said "which class would be best for Imoen to dual-class" I assumed you mean Fighter, Cleric, etc. Hence my "only Mage" reply.

Anyway, if I remember correctly Conjurer is the favourite because the opposite school is Divination, the most "useless" one.

In addition to my warning about the need to have a thief with 100 in Find Traps. I'd like to add that if u plan on playing BG 2 (and u'd be mad not to), then you'll find that Imoen will have dual-classed into a generalist Mage. This will happen regardless of what u do in BG 1. You can interpret this in two ways:

    1) Cool, that means I don't need to worry about making her a super strong mage for BG 2 (where casters take front-stage in battles), the game makes those changes for me, so I can just use her as an awesome
    thief in BG 1.

    2) Oh, in that case I want to be accurate to 'canon' to the tee. I will start dual-classing Imoen into a Mage when she reaches lv7 in Thief. That way, she will match her stats in BG 2 perfectly. (Imoen starts BG 2 as a Thief/Mage lv7/lv8)

I wish they'd left her as a pure thief.... i've never once felt the need to dual class Immy.

    @amftron

Imoen's stats are almost perfectly setup to dual-class into Mage. I don't bother with it in BG 1 cos she's my only thief and I need her for the traps. But a pure thief lacks much of a battlefield presence, so having her as a very potent mage in BG 2 is pretty nice/useful.

Dual-classing her hardly seems worth it, unless you do it at like level 2 and just play her as a straight mage (with a bow). Otherwise you're going to be playing with a developmentally delayed mage for a while. And since you're probably going to need another thief in the interim taking up an NPC slot, you might as well just keep Imoen as is and take an NPC mage instead.

If you don't mind a *slight* cheat though, you can always use Shadowkeeper to help her discover her half-elf roots and go multi-class M/T. There is something slightly off about her characteristics though, so it takes some care to do it properly.

Thanks for all the help guys, sadly I don't think I will play BG2 (don't have it), so Imoen will be fine being dualled at lv6 (already at lv5) and I have Coran to help as another thief.

That's like a lot of foreplay without the actual sex... But whatever floats yer boat :p

Seriously though BG 2 is awesome, and its pretty cheap off GoG. Though I suppose you could wait for BG 2 EE too.

    BG2 costs usually how much?

No urgent need to dual class Imoen with a balanced party. One mage is plenty. I like to roll with a double priest setup if anything.

I like 2 mages, since I can use spells from any school :)

He's playing vanilla BG. You can dual to specialists (assuming you meet the race/stat requirements) in vanilla because they're (correctly) implemented as separate classes, instead of mage-kits (wrong) as in BG2.

Conjurer is technically the best, especially for BG1, because you don't lose anything of value. In BG2 the loss of true-sight is annoying but can be compensated (Imeon is T/M in BG2, due to the above changes to the way specialists are handled).

I hope when bg2:ee comes Imoen's being dual classed and at what level will carry over from BG:EE

Its annoying but you can Keeper her to whatever she was. But yeah it'd be nice if you had the option of having it do it for you.

The Q&A thread states it will not be a feature at release, but it might be added later.

Do what ever you want, as its all about having fun/role playing.

But IMO she will be more useful and fun purely as a thief in BG1. I love having a good thief, so I can rob everyone blind, but each to there own.

I take it you are aware of/that

    -a thief's back stab ability
-becoming a dual class mage will prohibit the use of most weapons
-She wont be able to use thief ablities until her mage class level reaches her thief level (i think?)
-Several mages can be picked up very early in BG1

Actually I've dualled her now and I think she is so awesome ^^ Short sword of backstabbing and kiel's buckler makes her the perfect target with buff spells then stealth kill :D Also Edwin is the more offensive mage in my party.

I hate dual classing Imoen, especially with the Canon party. It takes forever for her to get her thief skills back, especially if dualling at 7, so you either need a second thief for half the game or just trip every trap going.
  • dracostrikedracostrike Member Posts: 151
Tripping every trap isn't that bad with Kagain ^^ Built like a beast he is :)

    I think somebody hasn't visited Durlag's Tower yet. ^.^

By the way, all the Tales of the Sword Coast content is based in Ulgoth's Beard. It's worth a visit at some stage.

I've heard about it and some items such as Kiel's Buckler. :) By that time I should Imoen's finding traps ability back ^^

If you make some haste through the first few chapters, you can get Coran at a low enough level (3/3) that you have time to pump up his Find Traps effectively for endgame. Personally I prefer Coran to Imoen as "main thief" for his better damage and AC. Then you can dual Imoen whenever you feel like it.

I dualed Imoen at 7 and just got mage level to 8 and regained thief abilities. In the character information page I read "Backstab multiplier: x0". Is that normal? :-O

No it should be x3. Are you using any mods? I'm not able to repeat the bug.
