Imoen can only dual to a Mage, so...
What's going on then?
So when you said "which class would be best for Imoen to dual-class" I assumed you mean Fighter, Cleric, etc. Hence my "only Mage" reply.
Anyway, if I remember correctly Conjurer is the favourite because the opposite school is Divination, the most "useless" one.
1) Cool, that means I don't need to worry about making her a super strong mage for BG 2 (where casters take front-stage in battles), the game makes those changes for me, so I can just use her as an awesome
thief in BG 1.
2) Oh, in that case I want to be accurate to 'canon' to the tee. I will start dual-classing Imoen into a Mage when she reaches lv7 in Thief. That way, she will match her stats in BG 2 perfectly. (Imoen starts BG 2 as a Thief/Mage lv7/lv8)
Imoen's stats are almost perfectly setup to dual-class into Mage. I don't bother with it in BG 1 cos she's my only thief and I need her for the traps. But a pure thief lacks much of a battlefield presence, so having her as a very potent mage in BG 2 is pretty nice/useful.
If you don't mind a *slight* cheat though, you can always use Shadowkeeper to help her discover her half-elf roots and go multi-class M/T. There is something slightly off about her characteristics though, so it takes some care to do it properly.
Seriously though BG 2 is awesome, and its pretty cheap off GoG. Though I suppose you could wait for BG 2 EE too.
Conjurer is technically the best, especially for BG1, because you don't lose anything of value. In BG2 the loss of true-sight is annoying but can be compensated (Imeon is T/M in BG2, due to the above changes to the way specialists are handled).
But IMO she will be more useful and fun purely as a thief in BG1. I love having a good thief, so I can rob everyone blind, but each to there own.
I take it you are aware of/that
-a thief's back stab ability
-becoming a dual class mage will prohibit the use of most weapons
-She wont be able to use thief ablities until her mage class level reaches her thief level (i think?)
-Several mages can be picked up very early in BG1
By the way, all the Tales of the Sword Coast content is based in Ulgoth's Beard. It's worth a visit at some stage.
