Are katanas breakable? And should they NOT be?

I was thinking of playing as a barbarian or swashbuckler in my next playthrough of BG:EE. Either one is capable of opening that super-locked chest in Winthrop's inn and obtaining that high-selling gem (the barbarian by rage, thief by lockpicking). Once I've done that, I was thinking of buying that high-priced katana - so naturally, I'm thinking of making my PC proficient in katanas.

My question is, is there a chance that the katana will break in the early portions of the game, before the iron crisis has been resolved? I don't want to spend all that money only to have the weapon shatter on the first hit - especially since katanas are rare otherwise.

If katanas are indeed breakable, I would argue that they shouldN'T be - not only due to their high price and craftsmanship, but from a storyline perspective, they are imported from another region, so their metal has not been collected from the same tainted mines.

This question has come up several times. I'd suggest looking up the other threads to follow the discussion there, but I think I remember them being in fact non-breakable, for the reasons you mentioned (imported). Might be wrong, though, I only glanced over the topic briefly.

This has been up before iirc, they're indeed not breakable, and the reasoning was much like what you argue. The high price in turn also has a lot to do with them not breaking in an area where most other metal objects do.

Katanas and the Wakizashi class swords don't break.I believe the game takes them as imported weapons.

In the process of importing them they could easily have been given the effect that randomly breaks them though. Afaik it was a conscious decision to leave it out.

Given the rarity and price of katanas in combination with their exotic origin, it would be logical both gameplay-wise and fluffwise for them not to break.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but scimitars DO break, correct? At least I remember them breaking in original BG1 (with TOTSC installed).

Scimitars are common on the Sword Coast and as such are probably forged locally. Ninja-to, katanas, and wakizashis not so much.
