Really elminster? Of all things in BG2 you decided to pick the Chateau d'Irenicus as an example of difficulty? Area so easy and boring that there is a mod letting you skip it completely...
You were the one that brought up beginning areas.
Any area in these games is easy if you know what to expect. So sure "Chateau d'Irenicus" is easy for people who've played the game for years (and frankly boring even if you haven't played the game probably hehe). But for a noobie its entirely possible to glance a trap somewhere in that dungeon and get killed. At least if you are playing on core difficulty anyways (I haven't played normal difficulty in years so I can't say for that).
Also it comprised only the first sentence of my paragraph. So its hardly like I only chose it out of all of BG2.
Again...it requires them to be a fresh noob.....or to have developed bad habits during BG1. If you played BG1, with a PnP-mind set, while keeping the differences in implementation in mind, you should have no trouble at all in 2.
Most problems with lack of knowledge are negated by having a scout. And keeping a solid line up of memorized spells that are always useful.
Because the beginning of BG is the most brutal. Generally if you're making an argument, you pick what supports it the most.
The beginning of BG is challenging because you have so few options. Your characters don't have many special skills, casters can cast once per day, you have no magical items and only 1-2 potions of speed.
There really is not much you can do in a fight than try it again and hope for better luck with rolls.
This changes as you gain levels and items - you can fall back and re-evaluate your strategy, memorize different spells, use consumables, or magical items. You can try a different approach, something that is simply not possible at the BG low levels.
Similarly, BG2 gives you all these options from the very beginning and it throws at you magical items from the very beginning as well.
