i hope not _everything_ about baldur's gate 2's engine is being used

IE - Bards can't change armor in combat, bard songs don't actually scale, you can't dual class INTO a mage, summons are seriously imbalanced with most being nerfed, etc. Not to mention that the wild mage is extremely imbalanced.

I mean, I'm still super duper excited that I'll be able to play the series on my iPad soon, but I've been playing (and writing guides) for more than a decade, so I've gotten pretty curmudgeonly about the games (in particular I must be one of like 10 people who preferred BG to BG2, at least in terms of D&D rules implementation).

What do you mean you can't dual class into a mage? How do you explain all the Kensai/Mages?

you can't dual class into a SPECIALIST mage, which you could do in BG1 and is legal by D&D rules. it's a flaw with how kits were implemented (or rather, specialist mages were turned into kits)

Ah, well. ...Isn't it enough to become an unstoppable Thief/Mage or Kensai/Mage killing machine? Do you really need MORE spells?

yeah, it more has to do with BG1, where that extra spell/day could really help you out. but alas, half the series will be spent at levels 1-8 so :/

Well, the level cap is going to be higher than 8 in EE, I think. Still, you have a point. Those extra spell slots do make a big difference at lower levels. As somebody who prefers single class characters, though, I'd suggest just rolling a Specialist to start with if that's what you want to do. Gnome multi-class would be good for that, too.

It's also a very easy edit to accomplish specialist dual-classing on your own. And there is a mod that improves the quality of summons (Sword Coast Stratagems I believe).

I would love for Bards to get a little love as I always felt they were the red-headed step child of BG. The main change should let them play their songs during combat (I thought in PnP that could be done...) otherwise it is hardly ever used and feels completely useless. Also if it's true that it never levels up (I never really paid much attention to it because it was more or less useless), that should be fixed as well.

I always wanted to make a serious attempt at going through BG/BG2 with a bard, but with how they're implemented in the infinity engine, they are seriously gimp...

I would hope no one could change armour during combat. Not just bards.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think no class could change body armor during combat, not just Bards.

If I recall, according to my Core Rules CD, there was a Multi-class called Mage/Bard. I wonder if it'd be possible to make.

Pro Bard song improvements (by the way, they are far from gimped, ever heard of "Bards with Wands"?), contra Armor changes in combat. I started up Icewind Dale two days ago and I was seriously baffled that I was able to change armor during combat.

Well, I mainly though the being able to change armor in combat was a good counter balance to the fact that there is no elven chain in BG. (Though in Bg2 it seems like you keep tripping over them). So I singled out Bards but I meant all classes (I was too excited to think straight while writing out my original post).

But yeah, as an aside, any class that can use Wands of Fire are ridiculously powerful in BG. Garrick is my standard engine of destruction. Dynaheir/Edwin are nice, but I just let them use up spell slots for sleep, haste, and slow :)

Not being able to change armor in combat makes sense to me. I may not like it, but it makes enough sense that I'd rather not try to argue about it. I'm just irritated that if you resurrect someone mid-battle they lose everything.
  • theleethelee Member Posts: 76
Yeah, that's the other thing. Resurrection actually had a point in Icewind Dale 2, cause then you could pause, equip all your stuff, and charge in. In BG2 it meant you had a naked guy who was going to die again really fast.

Make that 11 people, I prefered the first one too :). Never played as a bard, so I can't give any input into that.
