BG2 invisibility

I have just been playing the planar prison, and came across a slightly odd behaviour from the warden. I was hidden in shadows with a cloak of non-detection, and came into eyeshot of the warden. He immediately started casting against me - he didn't have to dispel or anything. What's going on? Can some enemies see through all hiding, or is this a bug?

Some enemies can see through invisibility. Generally all your powerful enemies will have this ability as a given. A safe bet to find out is if it's not human and it looks dangerous, it can probably see through illusions.

Unfortunately due to game mechanics, they still have to dispel your invisibility in order to cast spells on you despite the fact that it won't make a difference to them knowing where you are. It's the games way of saying "you don't know where they are so you must dispel them first" despite the fact that in a real PnP game, people could either listen for where they are or just guess. This means that if your invisible and your invisibility can't be dispelled, then you have made all of the most powerful spellcasters helpless more or less.

As far as i know natural stealth(hide in shadows/move silently) can't be detected with the cloak on.True Sight or not.The cloak doesn't work with an invisibilty spell cast on you though.

What were the enemies casting? Offensive spells, or True Sight (or See Invisibility or something)? The latter is typical. Most enemies somehow know if invisible creatures are around and, if they can, will cast spells to counter it. Natural stealth with the cloak of non-detection can't actually be broken, though, so they'll just waste their spells. Which is kind of awesome.

Also, I believe that some events are triggered by a party member passing a certain point, whether they are concealed or not.

there is a yuan-ti mage that will cast true sight there, and plus that cambion will cast true sight as well, and even with improved invisibility if you do something offensive, you will become partially visible and all the baddies will be able to see you

This was before I became visible. Sadly I'm not sure I remember the details that well - they were definitely not just True Sight or buffs, but I can't remember if it was just summons at first, then proper offence once I had thwacked them and so broken cover. I was definitely in shadows with a cloak of non detection, rather than under a spell or item effect.

Non-Detection or Immunity: Divination will not protect against creatures that can naturally see through invisibility. Cambion-type creatures (like the Warden) can do that, iirc; so can Dragons, Beholders, Liches, and many others in BG2/ToB. This is also part of the reason why backstabs aren't great in BG2/ToB... :(

Well, they're pretty good if you get to take a mage out of a battle before it starts - as long as your backstabber can live with suddenly becoming visible in the middle of the battlefield on his own.
