Which idea is simply better? (BG1 with ToSC only)

Kagain with Helmet of Opposite Alignment wielding Defender at +2 proficiency points?

Or Kagain with *Any Helm in ToSC* wielding the Battle Axe +2 at +4 proficiency points?

I would like towards the endgame for Kagain to be the ultimate tank and just wondering which way would be better, also Kagain takes priority over the rest of the party item-wise.

In my game, Kagain wields the Battle Axe +2 at +4 proficiency points. Problem is, he can't even hit a fat ogre's arse because of his low strength. He will always be a good tank(with gauntlets of dexterity), but boy does he suck at hitting things.

I have to either feed him strength potions constantly or cast a strength spell.

Kagain makes a fine marksman, if equipped with said dexterity-boosting gear.

    killing drizzt - drizzt weapons
no killing - axe because other weapons sux compared to +4 prof +2 axe + you can throw it for mages!

High Mastery (4 pips) in a weapon gives +3 to hit and +4 to damage, as I recall. Specialization (2 pips) gives +1/+2. Therefore, the Battleaxe +2 will get (from magic and proficiency) +5 to hit and +6 to damage, whereas Twinkle (Drizzt's defender) will get +4 to hit and +5 to damage. Now, Twinkle will also give you +2 to AC, but if Kagain is your main tank (and why would he not be?) you can give him the Helm of Balduran, netting another +1 to hit, armor class, and saves, as well as a small hp bonus. So if you don't have a better option to wield the Helm of Balduran, definitely go with the Battleaxe +2. If you have a lot of front-liners, the two options are probably about equal.

Give him the Big Fisted Belt as well as the Gauntlets of Dexterity, and he becomes an excellent tank. (I'm running him that way myself at the moment, and he's demolishing all opposition in short order.)

Of course, almost anyone can become at least a half-decent tank with that equipment, but Kagain becomes especially good.

The Big Fisted Belt isn't in BG1 :/

Oh, sorry, yes, I've just realised that the topic header does specify BG1+TotSC. My bad.
