It would be nice to look actually like a mage when using a robe on fighter/wizard or look like a rogue while using leather armor.

This has already been created. I believe it was from 1PP.

    Fighters look really ugly in leather armor. They look like they're not wearing pants.

    I agree, I would be also happy with the higher level class taking precedence for the "looks". But this only works for dualing, your suggestion is better for multiclassing and offers the ability to decide the appearance.
