advice for Imoen dual

I am only using a party of 3, my F/C, Imoen and Kivan. I want to max Imoens thief levels at 5, then go to Durlags Tower. Is there any complication if I just level squat her mage levels, so she doesn't lose thief abilities in the middle of the tower? I've done it in IWD, but not BG. I assume it still works.

No problem, except that you lose the exp you accumulate between the last actual level up and the dual point iirc.

Can you elaborate? I'm not sure I follow.
So I couldn't save up to level her 3 levels at once with all the XP I squatted on?

If you eran 800 xp after you level but befor you duel that xp is lost when you dual, the xp in your first class get set to the amount need for that level and you will have 0xp in your new class

Once you dual class your exp will be reset, so you can't save e.g. "mage levels" in advance if you dual to mage. The only place you can squat is really at the thief level where you want to dual from, until the timing is right and you can afford to lose your thief abilities for awhile.

Not sure what you mean by level squat. When you dual class its possible to lose out on experience you've gained with a character if the characters experience is higher than what is necessary. So a level 5 thief with 15,000 XP would have 5000 earned XP disappear if it were to dual class (since you only need 10,000xp to be a level 5 thief). You'd end up being a level 5 thief, level 1 mage with 0 xp for the mage portion.

Likewise if you were to have a level 2 thief with 10,000 xp and you dual classed you wouldn't be given the option of leveling up the thief class to level 5 later (even though you had the experience required to advance to level 5).

You can not squat levels unless you dualclass into mage. And once you dual class Immy's thief skills will be inactive.

Any excess xp from thief lvl 5 will be gone when you dual into mage.

If I understand you correctly and you want to hit level 5 with thief, save up a bunch of extra exp and then using that for mage levels, you can't do it in-game. But you can easily use EEKeeper to edit the exp in and make it that way.

That's what I was trying. Thanks for explaining.

Anyone have advice for how to handle this? Just be willing to their away a chunk of XP for Imoen?

    1) Use EEKeeper to edit the XP and achieve the "squatting" effect you want

    2) Bite bullet and plan your leveling so that you regain levels before taking on the Tower

    3) Waste all the XP you'd gain in between the dual-point and the time you actually want to dual.

    That's your options, pretty much.

You could get her to level 5 (pretty quickly as a thief) then clear a couple of areas for easy XP to get her close to level 6 as a mage.

Unfortunately the 40k XP you'll need for mage level 6 requires 120k XP as a party. Even clearing the Basilisks, Ankhegs and Sirines won't get you that amount.

You might well be able to get Imoen to thief 5->mage 6 before Baldur's Gate with a 3 person party. The Mage levels will never be quick though.

I just decided to get her to 5/6 t/m before I go to durlags tower. I wanted to get there sooner, but I can do plenty of other things first.
