Why ranger archer have to be neutral good or better?

I've just wanted to create another char. The idea was to assemble neutral evil team. So I would go with Edwin, Montaron, Kagain, Viconia and Dorn. Quite offensive team so I've decided to go fully offensive and myself ranger archer since IMO archer are the best damage per round. BUT here comes the problem - It is virtually impossible to creat neutral evil ranger archer. What do you think about it?

Rangers, much like paladins, are inherently good and will 'fall' if they don't stick to their code and act honourably.

Make your ranger, then change his alignment to neutral evil with shadowkeeper. Problem solved.

Rangers - kits included - have to be a good alignment (either lawful good, neutral good, or chaotic good). As for why that is... well, because the D&D rules say so. I seem to remember reading that Gary Gygax (co-creator of D&D) based the ranger class on Aragorn (from Lord of the Rings), so that's why they have to be good.

Fair enough. I guess I can arrange this that way, Kagain and Dorn goes melle, montaron uses crossbow, I will go defensive as a prot healer. @Tj_Hooker - interesting new about Aragorn inspiration. However it would be go to be able to play skillful evil archer. Seriously, what a damage! Don't you agree?

Yes, and because the minimum stat rolls for rags is high, and with great power comes great responsibility.

We have been discussing the need for a trap using evil rag kit but it is in essence, a pipe dream.

If they can make evil paladins and good assassins they can make evil rangers

They removed that restriction in later editions of D&D (3+). In Neverwinter Nights 2 for example, you have an evil ranger companion who's pretty cool.

But here, we're stuck with 2.5 rules.

There's an old BG2 mod somewhere on the interwebs for the "generic archer", a ranged fighter kit. Not sure if it's compatible with the Enhanced Edition, but you could look it up. You could perhaps approximate it via EEkeeper and some self-imposed restrictions.

@Madhax: it should work with BG:EE, same with the Anti-Paladin which comes with the same mod.

I do think it would have been cool if Overhaul had added an evil Ranger kit alongside Blackguard.

What is better than neutral good?
  • If you're looking to roll an evil ranged specialist and don't want to go the generic archer route, you could roll up an axe-throwing Kensai. They get the same hit and damage bonuses an archer gets (only faster because of faster leveling) and Kai > Called Shot. Unfortunately, the only magic returning throwing axe is deep in Durlag's, but you can get by with normal throwing axes and the magic ones Taerom sells in the mean time. Otherwise, there's the bow-using assassin, since poison weapon works with ranged attacks.

I thought you could get a returning throwing axe in the caves beneath candelkeep after the catacombs from the one group that works for Serevok. Am I making this up?
There should be an evil ranger kit like blackguard for paladins. You would think they could be at least neutral like Druids.

You're right, I think I got my wires crossed with Bala's Axe. So pretty late in the game.

Just make a fighter with Grandmastery in Bows. You'll still be able to wear metal armor, although you lose that "Called Shot" Ability. Generally, you will still be able to hit anything you aim at.
