"I Exterminate Ankhegs": Adventures of a Truly Generic Monk of Ao

Howdy All!

I am a BG/BG2 fanatic from way back.

I recently downloaded BGEE via Steam and decided to walk down a less beaten path, character-wise. I've played Cavaliers, Undead Hunters and Kensais in BG2 - the paladins for the story arc (the irony of a holy warrior being the the spawn of an evil god) and the kensai for the sake of experimentation.

After reading some of Southpaw's threads (thanks for the inspiration!), I decided to go vanilla Monk. SSM kit looked interesting, but the lack of stunning fists and quivering palms sealed the deal for me. Hopefully, I'll be able to transfer my monk to BG2EE, because I really want to try out a quivering palm on Firkraag.

The challenge really is getting the Monk up to level 9, where some of the magic begins to happen (fists +1, 1d12, 3 x stunning fists, immunity to charm).

So first thing I did was remove the experience cap - just to get my monk to level 9. Second thing was having my Monk escort Imoen to The Friendly Arms Inn and having stay there for the time being. The third thing was roving the wilderness, smacking some assorted low level critters around and running errands until my monk achieved 4th level.

Then my monk tried his hand at squashing bugs at the Ankheg Nest. He died a few times but I was pleasantly suprised on how effective stunning fists are on ankhegs (and Greywolf and other assorted tougher opponents). At 975 experience points a pop, my monk started leveling up fairly rapidly. He's also getting filthy rich by selling the ankheg shells to the smith in Beregost. So much for the four ankheg quota.

Currently my monk is about 100 k from level 9. Having him hovering at level 8 till the end of the campaign is a waste of potential. Thus he will be honing his skills one ankheg at a time, whilst meditating on the enigma that is Ao.

After he becomes properly "enlightened", he'll proceed to gather 3 more adventurers - probably Neera for artillery support and buffing, and Imoen for thieving skills. I'm still trying to decide on who will assume proper tanking duties - maybe Ajantis, maybe Minsc.

Forecast: Sarevok will be getting his black, greasy heart pummeled out of his chest.

Nice. I'm also starting a monk game at the moment. They are certainly an interesting change after the "regular" weapon-using classes!

@Megiddo - glad to see another player that does not got deep into explaining, why a min-maxed berserker has 1 point more average damage than......... but instead takes joy in smashing other's faces with their fists.

Because I am one of those lucky players, that can beta-test the new patch, I would note that the Dark Moon Monk kit now looks very viable (yes, it was changed)
Currently, I took up Rasaad and my monks are travelling the Sword coast together, alone.
I will post on this in few days, when I get to level 8 with both of them. (Also, about the kits and their differencies. So far, I like the DMM a bit more)

For your fourth member - what about Yeslick? Fighter+Cleric.

Well, I managed to get my monk to level 9 - huzzah!

After that, I proceeded to fetch Imoen and Neera. Neera was level 6 (being our first encounter) but Imoen turned out to be a real slacker - she was, of course still at level 1. A few side quests later, I got her leveled out to 6 going on 7.

@Southpaw: Yeah, I forgot about ol' Yeslick. I assume he specializes in hammers. I'm also beginning to wonder if SSM would have been a fun route to go. Nonetheless, stunning fists do have their benefits...

OOC: You could also sell the Ankeg Shells in that little pocket map attached to the Hall of Wonders just North of the Flaming Fist Barracks I think(250 a shell). Fenten was sort of the back-up that always worked and also separated shells before EE.

The easiest way to level for any solo character is killing the basilisks in Mutamin's Garden. You get a free ghoul tank who can solo them with no risk. The ghoul can also often kill the mage and greater basilisks.
