i usually give them what they are good at untill i can find a magical weapon that i cant use and they can. and most mages i give slings to as darts (in BG vanilla not sure about BG:EE) have too few per stack and at thus expensive and seeing as most mages arent good archers that extra gold for MAYBE more damage is pointless, i'd rather have lots of maybe medium damage

I normally start with two-handed swords with Minsc and then convert him over to dual wielding as the game progresses. (BG2)

I've been thinking about Minsc's proficiencies. He starts with ++ in 2-weapon style and maces, but I've never used him this way before. It would be quite possible to use him as a dual wielder and get specialised in a further 1-handed weapon like Axes, Flails, or whatever uberweapon you don't have anyone in the party to use.

I was planning a BG2 run with a Cavalier (2h swords), Jaheira and Minsc as the returning Canon party tanks, with Imoen, Aerie and a rotating free spot. In this situation, I wouldn't have anyone regularly using the FoA, IMoD, Crom Faeyr and various others - maybe Minsc could use them?

FoA +5 in main hand and Crom Faeyr in of hand and minsc is set for the rest of the game. Would also like to add that you can also go Bastard sword on your Paladin and then take Keldorn for the last place in your team.

Cavalier (You) - Dual wield FoA +5 and Purifier.
    Inquisitor (Keldorn) - Carsomyr.

The purifier is the +4 Bastard sword you get from Watcher's keep that only paladin can use.

    And the +5 version.

@SionIV I was actually planning to have Jan as the permanent last spot. Three melee characters should be plenty, extra arcane spells are nice and I do love thief HLAs.

The Cavalier's been run through BG1 and already has ++ in 2h swords and 2h style, with + in axes (for troll killing) and bastard swords (Mainly to kill Karoug). I may well use Purifier whenever I put on a shield but I'm not planning to DW, it goes against how I view Paladins.
