Maximum Graphics?

I am only 13, but I can't get enough of old games, I know a majority of players these days play it because they did in their teenage years, so it's nostalgic. Although regardless since I am of a new era, I do have a rather top notch computer, and before I go ahead and vamp up the graphics, cache size, picture quality ect. I would like to know if there is a maximum.

Games like the first Command & Conquer had this issue, I'd have the graphics up, but the screen would look like it's in infra-red.
